I tried with a maxtor 80gb and a seagate 200gb on the albertron K8X800 mobo. the hdd won't power up when the ide cable is plugged into the mobo. when I disconnect it, it power up.

I don't know what is causing it, but this is driving me crazy.

it wont spin up at all with the ide connected? but it does spin up if the ide cable isnt connected? do i understand that right?

first thing i would do is set teh bios to "default"

have you double checked that the cable isnt backward?
have you tried using a different ide cable?
also have you tried plugging it into the different ide port? (ie use secondary port)

Sounds like either the cable's 1pin connection is switched, or a bad cable to being with.

if after you try another cable and it still doesnt work, then its gotta either be the harddrive or the mobo

and since you say its happening with 2 different harddrives that makes it most likely a damaged/faulty mobo

Is/are your HD jumpers set correctly i.e. MASTER/SLAVE/CABLE SELECT?
Are either of them sharing the IDE channel with an optical drive?

I don't think that matter. I tried each of them separatly. actually, the same thing happened to the dvd drive as well. it wouldn't even eject!
