Mobo powers on immediately when plugged in?

This is weird...

My mobo (MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum) powers up immediately when I plug it in.

I connected my case (Cooler Master Stacker) power switch and reset wires to the mobo and noticed nothing happens when I press either the power or reset buttons. I am also not getting any LED lights.

Now, when I remove all wires between the case the mobo the effect is the same. The mobo just powers up and shuts off as soon as I put in or pull the plug.

What would cause this?!?!?!

Doesn't shorting the power switch pins engauge the power supply? If the power switch pins are open, would that mean that there may be a short somewhere else on the mobo causing these symptoms?

I've seen that happen when the clear CMOS jumper was in the wrong position, and I've also seen it when the CPU is not seated correctly, or not installed at all.

Hi, I have seen that happen on at least two different Mother Boards. As long as it boots up OK my guess is that there is no problem. Luck, Jim

Try clearing the CMOS, reboot and make sure the BIOS setting for "start up after power loss" is set to OFF. AFAIC, that setting should always be set to off but there are rare occasions where setting that to "prior condition" may be needed.

Are you using a second power supply with your dual-PSU CMStacker? My drive array PSU (Antec TruePower 430) powers up as soon as I plug it in if the mobo PSU (Antec SmartPower 400) isn't also plugged in. It cuts off as soon as I plug in the main PSU even if I don't boot. It's weird! I'm sure it's related to the PSU adapter thing it comes with for powering on both PSUs with one switch but as long as I plug in the main PSU first it doesn't happen. And also check the power-on state setting in the BIOS (If you can get back there) so the board doesn't power up after a power failure (Unless you want it to).

Thx for the replies!

I have cleared the CMOS several times and even tried another CMOS battery. No changes. I might add, however, that the RAM for my system is just sitting at the Fed EX facility here in Denver (supposed to receive tomorrow) so I am just toying with this system RAM-less. It won?t even POST yet, but I thought it was odd that the power switch doesn?t function even without the RAM.

Btw-I am not using a 2nd power supply.

So, if the BIOS is set to power on when plugged in by default, then everyone with this board would have to edit the BIOS setting to use their case switch?
