Just bought a new MoBo and processor yesterday. Had strange things happening with the old one (rebooting on its own during games and such) So i figured may as well just replace and upgrade. SO i do the swap yesterday, and the damn thing wont boot up. I turn it on and all the fans start running but i'm looking at a black screen and the lights on my keyboard arent lighting up either. so i spend a few hours trying different things with no luck. This morning i took it all apart and reasembled. Nothing. SO i let the thing run for a little bit and it start to smell something funny. I cut the power and gave it a little whiff. Thought maybe it was my PS. Thats where the smell seemed strongest. (turns out the rear PS fan was just sucking in all the smoke) so i Replaced the PS with an old one i had laying around. Hit the power button and nothing. Dammit!!!! I let the thing run for a little bit and i saw the smoke. It was coming from the DDR dimm. Dimm # 2. DAMN the thing is fried!!!!! I take out the damaged ddr stick and try power up. Its starts up with out a problem. I'm stumped. Was it the ddr ram that caused the problems with the other MoBo???? Why didnt the thing smoke up in the other board if so. Could it have been a problem with this new MoBo that caused the stick to burn. The dimm is damaged now. seems to be burnt at the ends. So i dont wanna risk putting a new stick in. Would it be a bad idea to just keep the board and use one of the other dimms. It has 4. Or should I contact ABIT and demand a new board. Your thoughts are greatley appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If the 2nd DIMM was installed properly when you put it back together, then the mobo is messed up. I would try to get it fixed, you don't know if DIMM #3 or 4 are bad too......

Thanks, My question is what happens when memory goes bad. I've never had it happen before. I just always assumed it just stopped working. Is there a way to test sticks of memory? The symptoms my machine showed before the mobo swap seem to point to memory now in hindsight., Applications would take a while to load. In a few games the machine would just reboot itself. I'm stumped here. To desribe the stick now, there are two spots that are burnt on the contacts. they are like the third contact from the ends on both sides. Looks almost like there was a short circuit. Would a bad stick of memory cause a machine not to boot up? There was still another stick of 256 ddr ram in there thats still working now. As soon as i removed the burnt stick i booted up with no problems.
