Mobo Not Compatible with RAM?

Mobo: Asus K8V
RAM: Hynix 2x512 PC3200

Just built this system last week, and have been getting many crashes since. Now here's the kicker:

When I'm running with two sticks (tried slot 1 and 2, or 1 and 3), I get RAM errors within memtest up the alley. However, when running ONE stick at a time (each in slot 1), no errors are reported.

Now, in the manual, it states that this mobo DOES support Hynix chips, although they only mention the 256MB ones (which has a different code), and not the 512MB ones. I'm thinking of exchanging them with Samsung's on Wednesday, but in the meantime, can anyone offer some advice? I've also tried upping the voltage to 2.7v (or somethin), still a no go. And yes, BIOS and all other drivers are updated.

The one thing I haven't tried yet though, is to drop the speed to DDR333 - I don't wanna do this though, as I've read somewhere here or another that this actually decreases performance by a noticeable margin (ie. 512 DDR400 > 1GB DDR333). Any thoughts on this? Benchmarks, maybe?

Thanks.

Hi,

Are you using v1.20 of memtest+? I ask because there's a couple of K8 bugs fixed there.

As for decreasing the FSB - what exactly does that mean in terms of K8? I don't agree with your inequality about RAM size/speed but never-the-less if you pay for PC3200 for a compatible system you should expect it to work! If anytihing, try relaxing the other memory timings CAS-RAS, etc. and playing with things like interleaving settings.

At the end of the day is the RAM isn't up to it --> RMA

Good luck,

Andy

Memest - Actually, while I DO have memtest89, I ran it, but got a lil too impatient at the time (it wasn't overnight) so I closed it. This other program I'm using is also called memtest, and is very basic.

FSB - Oh, I was just wondering if there was a major loss in having to go from 200mhz to 166mhz. As for the timings, I had everything set to default (auto), should it should've been fine I guess.

UPDATE: I just got my Hynix sticks replaced with Samsung's, and all is fine now. :D Apparently, while Hynix sticks ARE suppported by the K8V, only single-sided ones are (finally figured out what SS/DS meant ;)). As for the Samsungs, DS ones are supported, and work fine now. What's good is that these are CL2.5, as opposed to the CL3 Hynixes. Guess I got a good deal then. ;)

I've learned my lesson: buy the mobo and open the manual before getting RAM. :)

dont worry bro, that mobo is probably the most picky motherboard on the market in regards to ram. i had issues with ram as well as many others as well. you are not alone in your troubles!
