my mobo (a8n-sli mremium) limits my ddr speed when i have all 4 512 sticks in it at once. Now... what do you guys think about 1.5 gigs at ddr400 vs 2 gigs at ddr333?? Im currently running a winchester 3200 939 and on thursday im getting my opteron 165. Once i get the cash, ill get 2 1 gig sticks (dual channel of course) and sell these on ebay or whatever. But anyways...help

Whinchester's lower the speed because of the first generation memory controller.

I would always go with more ram over the speed. The ram speed does not make as big of a difference with the AMD chips.

Yeah, it's not your motherboard, it's the CPU. With 4 sticks of ram, the winchester will default to 333mhz 2T. 2T is about a 3-5% performance hit normaly, so not that big, and DDR333 will be a small performance hit as well. If you are running programs that are using more than 1gb of ram, then you would still be better of running with 2gig, at 333mhz 2T.

yeah, but the memory is that cheap stuff. one is a corsair and the other 3 are just cheap. in cpuz they show up as 000000000000 for brand. they all run the same speed and ive had it for about 5 months and its extremly stable. you tink it will run 400 with my opteron on thursday?

Yeah I got cheap unmarked PC3200 RAM as well, and I'm running 4 sticks as well with an Opteron, and they're all fine at 200mhz, but any over is pretty much not gonna work. So if their rated PC3200 but cheap stuff, just set all the timings to auto, and you'll be running 2T (though you should be dual channel). As said, slower timings account for a couple %, and 2T is another 3-5%, but really its hardly an issue if FPS in games are your concern, where just having 2GB ram and a good video card is what matters mosts (and a good cpu:)).

Hey thanks alot, i was afraid i was going to have to buy 200 dollars in ram and try to dump this stuff. Whew... i really dont have another 200 bucks. In fact, i dont even have the entire 330 that i spent on this opty 165 either... :-D
