Mobo internal USB Header - NO power for Card Reader

I picked up 2 Rosewill 52-in-1 card readers from the egg and neither works. I get no lights and it doesn't show up in "My Computer".

It seems like I'm not getting power to my internal USB header. I've got an Epox 8rda mobo (nForce2) with WinXP Pro will all updates and am using header USB3.

I've looked through all my BIOS settings for "USB" assignments and they seem to be set correctly.

Any ideas?

Well, it's not hard to do. I eject those pins all the time with a staple. Just use it to lift the plastic tab locking the pin and it should slide right out the back.

Now I know "how" to remove the pin, but does it seem like a relatively "safe" thing to do given my situation🙂?

Also, I don't recall seeing a label called "Overshield" or "Voltage Overshield" for the diagram for mobo USB header or on the diagram for the card reader wire?

Are these labels called something else?

To start off with see if it works in the main USB port. If not, you have another problem. If they work, at least you know the units won't burn out anything.

It's my impression (?? no proof) that early USB standards intended to do something with that 9th pin that was eliminated along the line somewhere. I've heard of this fix in other places (cut or remove one pin) to get a case installed front USB setup to work.

There's no guarantees, but I would try it.

Just to clarify...the USB header on my 8rda mobo has only 9 pins (2 banks with 4 pins and 5 pins) and according to the manual, pin location "no. 9" is the blank. Also, pin number 10 is called "Over Current".

I can't check wiring diagram for the Rosewill RCR-102 card reader at work because it's a zipped file and my work PC does not have WinRar/winzip, etc. So when I get home, I'll look at the wiring diagram and if the 10 pin socket is labeled over current, overload, etc., I'll try removing the wire and see if it solves the issue.
 
SOB🙂 I removed the 10th pin ("shield") which is another USB Ground wire and it worked like a charm. As soon as I removed the pin (and taped it off) and reconnected the USB wire from the reader to the header (followed by starting the PC) WinXP recognized the new hardware and installed all the drivers.

I verified with an SD card and also tried out the USB port. Both of which worked fine.

I guess the 8rda doesn't like have more than 1 ground wire connected to the USB header.
