mobo fsb/ cpu fsb compatibility question

I have a socket a asus A7A266-E Mobo that has 100-166 fsb speeds, and I want to upgrade my processor from an xp1800+ which i believe has a 266 bus speed. Is it ok to get something like an xp 3200+ that has a 400MHz fsb speed? How does that work? What bus speed should I get?

Yeah it should be ok, but you will want to make sure that the motherboard you have will support up to a 3200+, if it doesn't then there should be some some bios upgrades that will usually let you know to what speed that will suport now. Whatever you get it will only run at 166fsb max.

Yeah, 99% chance the chipset (I don't remember which one that board uses, probably KT266A or even 133A...in any case, it is unlikely that it'll support the FSB of a last gen AXP. If you get it to boot w/ the chip, it'll be severely underclocked.

Yeah you are probably right, but there is a company out there (I forget the name) that we use sometimes to update older machines. The company sells you a floppy with a bios update and they send you a new CPU as well for the machine. I just did a machine with a 1700+ and boosted it up to a 2800+, they charge me like $120 not too bad considering it's alot cheaper then upgrading to a new machine.
