Mobo Dead or in a Coma?

I posted about this in computer help a while ago but I thought I might get more ideas here:

Abit KT7A, Amd Thunderbird, 3-256MB Dimms.

4 months ago, there was a burning smell and the system wouldn't power on. I replaced the power supply and the HDD and CDROM weren't recognized. I replaced those from remnants of previous systems. The system worked OK for 4 months and then it was reported to me that a squeaking or chirping noise was heard and then it crashed. After that it would boot but no HDD.

I replaced HDD with a new one, I connected the new one and the old D drive, the system powered up for 1 sec. then shut off. So I disconnected the old D drive, and the system started and I installed XP and all updates. The next day it again started for 1 sec, then quit.

I should say that I always use a grounding wrist strap when working inside the case.

Steps taken trying to troubleshoot:

I removed the memory 1 stick at a time and tried to power up.

I removed the board and powersupply from the case. I saw no visible damage to mobo, no scorching or bulging or leaking capacitors.

I got a power supply tester, the power supply turns on normally and all voltages are within spec.

I removed the heatsink/fan and took the processor out of the socket and replaced it. I then reinstalled the HSF with new thermal compound (Ceramique).

With the board out of the case, I installed each stick of memory in each memory slot and tried to power up each time, no luck. The board was sitting on the mobo box at the time with the 20 pin connector connected.

I cleared the cmos with the jumper and replaced the cmos battery.

I can't think of anything else to do, anyone got any other ideas before I start digging the grave?

Thanks,
BGC
