hi. someone pls help me.
i bought this comp just before xmas. spent quite a bit on it. fitted it myself. and since turning it on ive had problems. i get pls press f1 as it cant find the ps/2 mouse. which i dont have. and it seems like all games run poorly and crash and i have no idea why. i cant even play all the games i have. is there a way to tell me whats wrong and if i should buy a new mobo as i think thats whats causing the problems.
any ideas pls?

comp as follows.
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ (windsor)
MSI - K9A Platinum mobo
1ghz ddr2 pc2-6400
ATI x1900xt 256mb

Ok, firstly, If you can get into BIOS, ensure that USB mouse/kb is enabled.

Secondly, download and run Memtest overnight.

Post back with the results.
The above will take a little time, but doesn't cost you anything - lets start there first, eh?

after spending over 15 hours doing the test and passing 40 of the test things. it said no errors. my computer restarted cause we had a powercut tho. which was lame. is there any other tests to check if its something else? or is there anything i can post on here about the full details of the comp?

thanks

Well, What did you put into the box that wasn't already in it when you bought it?
Also, was the box working ok when you bought it?

If the answer to the 2nd q is 'yes', then we can start with what you put into it.
Might be faulty drivers or hardware - no blame here. ;-)

i bought a whole new system. so everything was brand new. and after installing all the hardware and booting up first thing was the press f1 thing. which will only go when i put a ps/2 mouse in. but i dont wanna have to do that just to not get that error. and when i loaded windows up and started installing everything on new hard drive i noticed it was kind of slow and then when i played games it would crash and not say why. just came out and thats it. only half life 2 and call of duty 2 seems to work. and according to some sites i been on it says my comp will play these games with relative ease and every game i have played seems to struggle.

i have a feeling it might be down to the mother board tho. seeing as when i was testing everythign i took one ram out and a game seemed to work. for a bit longer. tried taking that one out and testing other then when i did the pins to hold the ram in fell out. which also happened on another slot. and im thinking the whole motherboard is faulty. any way to test that?

It really does sound as if the chipset drivers weren't installed.

Did you buy the computer with no os installed?
Did the shop install any drivers?
Did you have any cd's that came with the system?

no the system was all single parts i allready had a windows disk and bought a new hdd so i installed it on there. so everything was bought seperatly and i installed everything myself.
would that be a reason why my computer doesnt run the games properly? as ive heard ppl with worse setups than mine play games the same or better than mine.

is there anything i can use to send u so u could see if theres something missing like that?

well basically i ordered all the essential hardware and put it all together. i booted the comp up and put xp disc in and installed xp on new hdd. after that i installed the drivers i got from motherboard. and all other necessary things like gfx card and other things. but it was from when i first booted it up before i even got a chance to put the xp disc in that i got the press f1 no mouse found error.

That would probably be a BIOS option - enable legacy support - usb kb/mouse.

Are you in a position to reinstall xp from scratch.
If yes, after xp installed, install sp2, install patches (dl them an burn them to cd), install mobo chipset drivers, install directx, install graphics card, then sound/NIC etc.
Then do software (leaving av/firewall till last if you are sure of the sources of your software and you are not connect to internet)

The one thing you left out that no one has asked yet:

What brand/wattage of power supply??

I ask this because it's actually a VERY important part of a nice system build that many people overlook.

when you took the ram out, the pins came out? Tell me you didn't just pull the ram without unlocking the clips on the ends?

haha no of course i unlocked it. silly. it pulled out on one side when i was taking it out. the pin just slipped out and wouldnt stay back in afterwards. about 3 others do it. so for a while now its been in single instead of dual channel cause i just couldnt get it in.

my wattage is 430w and its an antec neo HE430 with a +12v of 16A and a -12v of 0.8A

my comps that bad now that it even froze while playing sam and max = [ bad times

also some times i get it where the video display seems to power down but i got sound still coming out. but i have to restart cause i cant do anything else

i tried before to reinstall but got same result. so im still thinking it might be the motherboard. i mean i cant even play games which other ppl can with same setup.

pls pls give me some help into finding out whats wrong

Well you did say that you installed the chipset drivers, but how about doing a double check on that?

Open Device Manager and look for any yellow exclamation marks to the left of any listed devices.

For any yellow exclamation marks that you see (there might not be any at all), right click and then left click "Update Drvver" and then "Automatically Install."

Just try that.

the only exclamation mark is for the ethernet controller. which i dont use anyway. updating now but i doubt will make any dif at all. just nothing seems to work. my comp just plays everything crap and crashes on most games. could it be down to my gfx card u think? but i still have doubts its my mobo as everything has failed at some point.
hdd failed with i/o write errors. gfx card turns off when i play company of heroes sometimes. and did same with sam and max episodes. and frame rates are just really bad generally. even on some games at low settings

i allready said that further up into convo

its a 430w antec neo HE430 with a +12v of 16A and a -12v of 0.8A

but anyway why would that stop me playing games and making a game crash?

I can see it now.
Sorry.

Its just that a bad/cheap psu might not be good.

Antec had a spate of bad 'uns a year or two ago as well (or at least there happened to be more than the average of bad Antec psus).

Can you look in your event log and post back with some of the errors that coincide with the crashes - don't worry about the others for now.
Post back with
SOURCE
EVENT ID
and full Text description (can't copy and paste directly from the viewer, so is a bit of a pain)

Control panel
Admin tools
event viewer

also with that gfx card crashing sounds like a definite problem with a cheapo psu or an overclocked gpu

my m8 hu has a computer few years older than mine can play call of duty united offensive better than mine on same settings. i dont see how that works tho even if it is the psu ?

SCSI? don't think you have scsi devices on that pc do you? could be a cheap psu. do you oc your graphics card? i bet yes. your psu is an antec 480 right, that doesnt sound too bad. if its been 8 months, back up everything and reformat it. then reinstall your drivers and games.

so is everyone saying that i should reformat and then my comp will be fine?

by the way has anyone ever heard of this? i got a cpu monitoring tool with the motherboard. and everytime i use to run it (which was mostly at startup) it would cras hafter about 5 mins. i only found out that it was that when i took certain things off the statrup menu. after it wasnt starting up my computer was fine

also when i play games on skype or teamspeak it tends to crash the computer after a while. any hints?
