i just bought an Asus A7V8X from another AT'er, and am now looking for a cpu. The mobo cpu compatibility list has been quite helpful, but I'm sort of confused on the issue of athlon mobile cpus. should i be able to use a mobile chip with this motherboard? if the clockspeed and core match one on the list, will it still be compatible?. I don't know much of the difference between a standard and mobile athlon xp. any and all help is much appreciated.

The mobiles will fit in any skt A mobo. However, when using a mobile CPU you want a mobo that offers adjustments in the BIOS for: (1) FSB; (2) CPU multiplier; (3) vcore adjustments preferably down to 1.5-1.4 or lower (depending on how you intend to run the cpu and which mobile you get).

Since the mobile was not intended for desktops, many desktop mobo's don't automatically recognize the mobile cpu properely. So, you must setup the FSB, multi and vcore yourself. Otherwise many mobo's default the mobile the mobile cpu to FSB 100 and a multi of 6. Meaning the CPU will start out running at 600mhz.

I haven't personally used the mobo you just got. Check out the manual (if the mobo didn't come with the original, go to Asus's site and d/l one) and ensure the adj's I mentioned above are available.

Yes! Since the 64bit is about all that anybody posts about anymore I don't here too much current news on what OC's best recently. Heck, I don't think they are even produced anymore (could be wrong though).

The 2400+, 2500+ & 2600+ (45 watt chips) were all good OC'ers from what I hear. My 2600+ is.

The 3000+ mobile is the only one I have ever heard of NOT considered a good OCer.

The 35 watt series are supposed to be a good OCer's too.

Be a little careful, not too long ago someone posted about OCing their mobile XP. Turns out it was NOT a true mobile chip. It was some sort of low watt desktop chip, not a mobile. You don't want one of those.

HERE'S a chart with OPN/stepping codes for AMD cpu's. This should help you get what you want.

BTW, when I got my chip it was supposed to be (and is) a good OCer. The stepping code IIRC is IQYHA. If you can find one of those, get it.

I got a mobile barton 2500, and it runs stable at 2.45 ghz on 1.78v. Temps are like 49 idle, 56 load. I'm sure I could push it further, but since summer is almost here, I don't want to run it too hot. Anyway, the 2500, 2600 are good OC'ers, I definitely got more than my money's worth out of it. :D
