After considering i7-4770 and i7-3930k, and eventually choosing i7-3930K coz or 6 core and 64 GB support I am now shopping for a MOBO.

I have Gigabyte - GA-X79S-UP5-WIFI which was suggested to me. Is this a good option or is there an alternate in this same price range? This MOBO is costing me around USD 325.

My shortlisted configuration is --- Rather suggested;
i7-3930K
Gigabyte X79S-UP5-WiFi
Kingston HyperX 1600 - 32 GB RAM --- will upgrade later to 64
Segate Barracuda HDD 1TB 3.5 SATA 7500
Crusial SSD 256 GB
CoolerMaster 750 W Power Supply
Hyper 212 EVO CPU cooler
Corsair Case 200R carbide

Total price came around $1700 --- Looking around same budget.

Is the above ok? I was looking for a small form factor PC but moved to this coz of 64 GB RAM support. I currently own a shuttle SZ77R5 with i7-3770 and 32GB RAM, Corsair Force 120 GB HDD, Segate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1TB 7200 RPM.

I will be using this mainly for running my lab of VM's all on VMware. I dint want any of those beastly looking cases so went for the crosair.

Is there a better combination I could have for the same price but supporting 64 GB RAM?

Thanks,
Thomas

The GA-X79S-UP5-WIFI has wifi on board which I am not even sure I will use if I am going to run VMware on the box.

The case you have selected won't accept EATX motherboards. The ASUS P9X79 LE will do what you need for less money and ATX form factor. If there are specific features you are looking for that are present on the big Gigabyte board, let us know.

Replying to the CPU question in another thread, I think it is not hard to choose the 4930K if you are starting from scratch. The only reason to get a 3930K is if you can get a killer deal.

This is a complete new build and I am stating from scratch, So I would look at the best options available for a max budget of $1750.

I doubt I would use any features on the MOBO as I will be running VMware on the box, not to be used as any gaming rig. Max I will probably do is Put a Nvidia Quadro 4000 addition.

i7-4930K with GA-X75S-U5-WIFI, is there a better MOBO combination for the processor at the same or lower price?

Please let me know of other options.

Thanks.

Have you selected a different case to go with that EATX mobo, or will you switch to an ATX board that will work with the Corsair Carbide 200R?

I will stick with the crosair 200R -- Or dou you suggest I upgrade? If yes to 300? I am looking for a basic box, no fancy looking.

Thanks.

I vote Asus Sabertooth. That's what I have and its rock solid. That being said I also used a eVGA X79 FTW and while mine worked without any issues the layout didn't work out for me.

IMO I would get something with better Airflow. 300R or 400R can be found pretty cheap.

I'm using the MSI X79MA-45 mb I bought from Gillbot and am extremely please. Very small mb but does a nice job of OCing. It's in rig 2 below.

Upgraded to an Asus Sabertooth X79 today. Incredibly solid mb. Obviously more expensive but has tremendous cooling of VRM and more sata 6 ports PLUS wider spacing for running SLI/CF since it is a full sized mb. I will be moving the 2 EVGA 670 FTWs over to rig 2 and the GTX 680 back to rig 1 shortly (waiting for new radiator and then have to repipe system for 2 360mm rads to have appropriate cooling).
