i want to make a server out of a system someone gave me, its not a commodore but its pretty old- p2 233 (slot 1) i wanted to put a 80 gig ultra ata hd on it but obviously it wouldnt have it onboard so i ordered a contorller from promise and installed it but now the system wont boot up... bios wont start up- no text appears on the monitor at all. (no beeps sound or anything). i checked out the HD with my more up-to-date pc and its fine- i just want to know before i try anything else- are ultra ata's incompadable with some older mobos regardless of a controller card? i cannot tell what mobo i have- i just know its an intel with a p2 233 currently on it- 4 168-pin ram slots, 4 pci, 2 isa, 1 pci/isa, an agp slot. any ideas?

Ultra DMA----this was just a marketing ploy. You have to remember that the controller card is seen by the BIOS as SCSSI and it probably is not capable of this.
Boot into the BIOS and try and detect the adapter.

If your mobo doesnt even beep (post), you might have a big problem here...

pull your Ultra controller card out and put the old stuff back in... try again and see if the system boots...

yeah looks i do have a big problem here. i musta F'ed something up 'cause it won't boot up. i removed every device except the floppy.. adding a hd, then video card... all of which work individually. i guess my mobo has died while i was working on it. maybe static :( i gotta start using those static wrist bands... time for a new mobo

So it doesnt even post if you only boot with mobo, CPU, 1 stick of ram and video card? no HD, no floppy, nothing else...

If it still doesnt boot with that, then you either have a dead CPU or mobo...
