Hi,
I'm helping someone build a kids computer. They want to spend $150 for CPU and Mobo. Its a pc for the girls....
So his only requirement is that he wants to use PC-6400 ddr2 at least.

Can someone recommend a Mobo and a CPU to go with it for around that cost?

Thanks

Newegg has a Jetway JM26GP3 board for $39.99 plus shipping for am2 cpus. I would go for the single core 3200 for $25.99, which comes with heatsink. If you plan on downloading large files, then a dual core version such as the 4450e brisbane for $55 would be excellent, and uses only 45 watts. Whatever you buy, get the retail boxed version with heatsink. If you live near Fry's electronics, they have a terrific deal through Tuesday at stores only: the Intel e7200 retail boxed cpu with ecs board for $99.99. You can do any task with this cpu, including gaming.

Hey G,

you didn't mention if your friend wanted on board/IGP graphics, or if they have a graphics card.....

Regardless, one of these CPUs, all less than $80 will be fine:

Motherboards for AMD CPU, all with on board graphics:

Good Intel based boards, no on board graphics:

Intel, on baord graphics:

Hey,
He's got a Video Card already. Evga Nvidia 8600 for $60 I think...
He wants to spend $150 on CPU&Mobo...
Also he wants to go Intel at least C2D...so I dunno...with the current prices it could be hard to achieve this.

Hi G,

actually, should not be difficult at all--$150 is plenty for a CPU/Mobo combo.

Very inexpensive and capable Intel CPUs, 50 to 90$:

Lots of inexpensive board options:

I would recommend this:

$90

and

$60

OK, tax and such, but blame that on Uncle Sugar.....

$60 and

$90.

Also: for a budget build, AMD still is a viable option. One thing I like about buliding AMD systems is when attaching the CPU heatsink/fan, it doesn't feel like you are breaking a chicken's leg trying to jam those landing pods into the motherboard.

AMD mobos, inexpensive but capable:

Solid Asus board, $90:

Solid AMD CPUs:

45 watt, efficient, quiet, perfect for kid's machine, and matches up nicely with aforementioned Asus:
