Mobility Radeon 9600 and driver install

I have an emachines M6810 with the Mobility Radeon 9600 graphics chip installed.

I was unable to open Unreal Tournament or Half Life, so I tried to update the driver to the latest version.

I downloaded the catalyst drivers, and followed the preinstallation routine (uninstall all ATi products, manually edit the registry, etc - really, that is a ridiculous amount of work to update drivers).

Anyway, upon the driver setup, I get a box that opens in the middle of the screen that states:

Severe
Inf error
Video driver not found

I click Okay, and another window opens up that says

Setup was unable to complete the installation.
Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup.

I had already done that. It is running a standard VGA driver. What the heck am I supposed to do with this thing?

I've had this happen before. Usually the Catalyst drivers from ATI don't work for notebooks because the LCDs are closely tied to the drivers.

What I had to do was extract the Omega drivers, then install them manually thru the device manager.

im a electronic tech and do all the asus notebooks that come in, my best guess for you is your windows registry and/or drivers have been corrupted and best thing would be to format and reinstall your OS and make sure you have the correct drivers for your vga.

Omega drivers, and u dont have to install them through the device mgr.
Just uninstall andy radeon drivers and catalyst control panels, run thru the lates omega driver install.

Lack of support for mobility radeon device is a friggin shame, have to rely on 3rd party drivers to make games work.

On a mobility 9000, alot of agames, incl city o heroes do not run. When u install the omega drivers, they run fine.
