Mobility 9800 ... when?

Sorry, I haven't heard anything more than has been mentioned there and in the other thread in their "Notebook General" section.

I follow Notebook Forums too and that's usually where you'll get the first and most up-to-date info.
 
Well someone got their hands on it and ran 3dMark ... I know not the best benchmark but it's all I've found so far.

ATI Unveils Mobility Radeon 9800 on ExtremeTech

This new mobile GPU moves mobile gaming forward by a sizeable leap, but also won't likely adorn many low-end or light laptops. Instead, look for it in the big, heavy-chassis gaming monsters from Dell, Alienware, and VoodooPC.

What we find is that the Mobility Radeon is about 60% faster in terms of the overall score than its predecessor. Again, going from one generation to another, this represents a tremendous performance gain. This biggest single-game gain was in Halo, where the 9800 was 88% faster than the 9700.

This GPU will be available in Dell's high-end Inspirion XPS gaming laptop. For current Inspirion XPS owners who want to upgrade, Dell will have a program in place where you can have your laptop upgraded for $399.

Mobility Radeon 9800 previewed

Imagine a laptop chip that can not actually fit in all notebooks, just in thick ones, but with almost double performance then before.

It's for "desknote" as the card is almost half the size of Radeon X800 generation of cards. You definitely cannot plug this into any thin and light or medium size notebook.

There will be only a few design wins on this chip since one manufacturer is exclusively locked into this design and the M24 PCI Express core is just around the corner.

I have the mobility 9700 128mb with a 1.7 centrino and i got well over 4800 3d marks, which i thought was pretty good.
 
Dell has an exclusive contract for the first 4 weeks of availability. You won't see any others before the end of Aug, beginning of Sept. at the earliest.
 
I am fairly sure I saw someone on the notebook forum who ran a benchmark (unless he was pulling our chain) and he only had maybe 10% higher than the 9700 mobility.

Personnally, I just bought a 9100 and did not pay the extra for a mobility 9800 as I don't see myself playing Doom 3 or something similarly graphically intensive on a laptop... I'll run a few benchmarks when I receive it as I configured it for gaming less the 9800.

That's incorrect.

There are plenty of reviews and a handful of first-hand reports that show a 40-50% performance increase over the 9700 in a wide range of games and benches.
