Hi,

Need help on deciding which one would be better for a laptop ... pure graphic card comparison:

ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 128Mb DDR

ATI Mobility Radeon X600 128Mb DDR

I know X600 is a newer chip technology, but it would be perhaps compared with a 9600?

That 9700 is not a Pro right? There are no Pro's on laptops?

Anyway, which would be better, and why?

Thanks

I don't follow mobile graphics too much, but a mobility 9700 is similar to the 9600 desktop line, not an 8 pipe beast like the desktop 9700. link

watch your wording there dude

it isnt strictly the equivalent (maybes in terms of price or where it stands in the product range)

but basically the x600 and 9700 are essentially the same chip. the x600 is like the 9600 and the 9700 is just a faster clocked 9600. both still have 4x1 design, and i think the 9700 added a few new features like 3dc, but thats it.

the way i see it

the x600 = 9700 for laptops, as their basically the same core design

Yeah i must have gotten that mixed. Up. ATI really has a stupid naming scheme going on here.

Yes, that's right with the exception that it only has 8 pipelines and not 12. The mobility 9800 performs as well as a desktop 9800. Unfortunately the same cannot be stated for the mobility 9700, which is basically an overclocked mobility 9600.

One more thing to keep in mind is that the mobility 9700 does not have a 256-bit memory bus, only 128-bit.

Is X600 256bit memory? If so wouldn't that make it better?

No i don't think it is.

I actually have a laptop with a x600 128MB card in it. Its not bad for CSS very playable at 1280x800 with some settings turned to medium. It should probably have the dx level turned to 8 instead of 9 but I havn't bothered. I havn't played any games besides CSS on it but over all its not a bad card for that game.

Based on this review, I'd go with the X600. Either one will run the same so it's all about preference at this point. If you want PCI-Express, go with the X600. Otherwise, get whichever is cheaper.

MRX600 should be the same as MR9700 in terms of pipes and memroy bandwidth. The only real difference may be that the X600 is PS2.b, while the 9700 is simply PS2.0. I'd take whichever one is clocked higher.
