MobileMe Family

Amazon has it for $100, anyone want to go in on one of the sub accounts?

$$$ Math

$100 / 5 people (including me) = $20 for a year of service

How would that work exactly? I'm not too familiar with MobileMe. Do they just give you a series of keys to create accounts, or are they somehow linked?

yeah you get 5 keys, you can start the 60 day trial then just enter the key in. The sub accounts only get 5gb of storage however.

From MobileMe terms of service:

When you accept these TOS and complete the MobileMe sign up process, you become the MobileMe ?Member Account? holder. You are required to select a unique name upon sign up that will be used for your account (your ?Subscriber ID?). You may be permitted to purchase and add additional ?Sub-accounts? (also known as ?Family Member? accounts) to your Member Account. You must select a separate Subscriber ID for each Sub-account you create. You are responsible for all activity that takes place on your Member Account and any associated Sub-accounts.

and the real fun one...

Sub-account
If you use a Sub-account, the Member Account holder has full control over your Sub-account and may alter, close or end the Sub-account at any time, as well as request information related to your use of the Sub-account, including machine and service use information, without notice to you.

I am NOT implying that ric1287 would do anything malicious, not at all. It just seems like a rather precarious situation to enter into.

ah, didn't know that. All the ebay auctions selling the same thing say that once you change the pw they have no control over your sub account. Guess thats a bit of a lie 🙂

It is, but is there an alternative that's free? Closest I've found is Windows Live (Skydrive, etc) which is free. Unfortunately the web interface is not very good, and there's no Mac client. Other "cloud" storage services that I've found are comparable to MobileMe's price (street price) and don't have the other features like contact syncing, etc. If you know a good, inexpensive/free alternative to MobileMe, I'd love to hear about it. Apple really needs to increase the value or decrease the price though.

If you don't have another Exchange account, you could use Google Sync + DropBox/SugarSync.

That will fill in pretty much all of the gaps of MobileMe. You'll be missing some features, but nothing major. My main issue is that there should be another way to accomplish that than Exchange, or Apple should allow more than 1 Exchange account.

well, if anyone wants to do it still let me know. Got 1 person interested so far

I'll provide my contact info and my heat = ric1287

to mugs, I absolutely love sugarsync, probably the best service I have paid for on the web. Being able to email your assignment while in class to your teacher = worth the $25 a year right there. and also, Sugarsynce did have a 10GB option, I am on it, it's called the starter pack, not sure if it is around still though.

You can pick up the individual version from an Apple store for $70 a year. Most stores will gladly take the $30 off if you simply just ask.

uhh yeah they'll take 30 off if you buy a $1500 computer maybe

what's the total per person right now? and I need some elaboration on "full control" .. does that mean you have access to all my content? ie ical, mail, etc?

true .. what I don't like about the google -> exchange setup is that it's more of a proxy and some changes can take a while to propagate. For instance, changing the names of labels or creating new ones often isn't as fast as I'd like it to be.

Drafts are another weird issue .. they don't sync with the drafts folder on gmail, but local to the iphone.

I'm also really starting to despise the gmail labels. I just want folders. It's really starting to become a pain in the ass when I deal with multiple IMAP clients .. iPhone, Apple Mail, Thunderbird and then the gmail webapp. 98% if the time it works fine but every now and then something goes wrong and my sent mail is mixed up with my received mail because I archived it or move it to the wrong folder. That and conversations reappearing in your inbox after you moved them because someone replied.

I know it's nitpicking and mobileme isn't perfect either .. I've used it and i HATE the web interface. I HATE that I can't apply incoming filters.

Right now there's no perfect solution ... least in my opinion.

I'm sort of interested. I'm currently on the trial membership. Can I use that account as one of the sub-accounts? And I'd like clarification on what the primary member can and cannot do.
