Mobile Turion, Core Duo or Core 2 Duo.

Some friends are looking for my advice on laptops.

The question is between a Core Duo 1.66-1.7+ GHz, a Core 2 Duo 1.83 for $100-150 more or in this case a Turion X2 1.6 GHz for about the same price as Core Duo but with more ram and bigger hard drives.

The Core Duos are from Dell, I don't know how good Dell is for reliability, it is just cheap with coupons.

The Turion is an Acer, I don't remember from were.

Will the 1.6 Turion be slower the the Core Duo, obvious for the Core 2 Duo, but is the rest worth it?
And is Dell/Acer any good or should they look elsewhere for my low budget respectable laptops?

Thanks

Core 2 duo isn't really a whole lot faster than core duo. The higher clock speed will make it slightly faster. If you are worried about 64bit I'd go with the core 2 duo. If you aren't I would go with core duo. I just got an Acer laptop with a core duo, and I'm very happy with it.

The way I see it, its a trade of between battery life and the extra RAM/bigger HDD

The X2 WILL run a little hotter, and will reduced battery life. But at similar speeds as the core duo.

The core duo, is more expensive but otherwise a better choice for mobile computing

Thanks, will see what they prefer. Nothing to look out for band wise?

I didn't even notice there was a Notebook section. How long has it been around?

I've been using a Turion X2 1.6 for the last few days (on an HP nx6325). It seems very good...doesn't run hot at all, and the rendering is almost as quick as my last home tower (which ran an X2 3800+). Another very important point to look for on laptops (if they plan to play games) is the graphics on-board (probably more important than the CPU...).

Merom > Yonah > Turion

If you want/need 64-bit and about 15-20% better performance, Merom is the best choice (over Yonah).

Turion...meh, only if price is your main consideration.

Actually, I would add Merom > TurionX2 > Yonah > Turion > Sempron > Celeron
