What does the future look like for playing first person shooters smoothly on notebooks?

not very good. Nobody is interested in making good protable 3d cards because there is no marke for it. All the hardcore gamers use desktops.

Actually Nvidia is FINALLY bringing the Geforce 2 to notebooks next year. Obviously desktop systems will be the best for the forseeable future, but notebooks should finally be a realistic gaming platform again.

Not great but soon you should be able to do some gaming on a laptop.
NVidia has announced the Geforce2GO chip for mobile computers.

My friend has a dell laptop (inspiron i think) with a 32meg vid card. I played cs on it and q3 while i was out of town. It worked great. Maybe it wasn't the same speed that I get with my geforce2, but it worked. Very good at 1024x768. Just looked at dell's website, i think he has the inspiron 8000 with the ATI M4 (probably another rage 128 rehash) with 32megs. The computer itself is pretty fast though, p3-750 with 256megs ram.
