I've used mobile racks in every one of my computers over the last 5-6 years. I have never, ever had any problem with them. I'd make sure you don't have some $5 El Cheapo mobile rack. Maybe the Centronix connector on the back is coming apart.

I assume you're not swapping the drives out without shutting down? Unless you have a specifically hot-swap capable controller card.

In my main rig I have been using a Lian Li Mobile rack for over a year with no problems. It has 2 nice little cooling fans built in to keep everything chilly and works like a charm.

HOWEVER

On my backup computer I am using a cheap-o plastic mobile rack and it's hit or miss as to weather it is recognized at startup. PLUS the whole key lock assembly on the cheap-o rack is a POS!

Moral of the story:
You get what you pay for ;)

Are you designating the drives as removeable in Windows? Well, you say you're not hot-swapping them so I guess not (No need to). I saw a review for a RAID-5 enclosure where the dumb ass kept yanking them using standard IDE and without changing settings and wondering why WindowsXP Pro continued to show the drive letter and would freeze when he tried to access it. He called it "an expected limitation of Windows" :D

I've been using Lian Li racks for several years and have never had a single problem with them. I have 5 and all are using 7200 RPM drives.

the el-cheapo $5 ones may not have adequate cooling for 7200 rpm drives or any drive that generates a larger amount of heat than your average modern 5400 rpm drive. in that case, you may run into overheating issues. the better ones have better cooling.

What type drives do you have? The RH-12 is not supposed to be used with anything about 5400rpm drives. Lian-Li has other drives with better cooling for faster drives.
