Mobile Pentium 4 vs Pentium 4

Obviously the Mobile Pentium 4 is going to have longer battery life... but how much is the performance difference? Thanks.

Actually there are three flavors of Pentium 4 chips that are used in laptops. First, pure desktop Pentium 4s, which can have 800MHz bus and Hyperthreading.
Second, desktop Pentium 4s with like 5-10% reduced TDP and with SpeedStep, 3.2GHz and 533MHz bus with Hyperthreading, also called Mobile Pentium 4, Pentium 4 Mobile, or desknote processor, different from Pentium 4-M.
Third, Pentium 4-M's which are 35W TDP and Speedstep but its almost obsolete and highest speed is 2.6GHz, 400MHz bus with no Hyperthreading.

So yeah, first two is your likely option, third option reserved for Centrinos. First options have 865 desktop chipsets with dual channel DDR400 memory, some older ones have SIS chipset with single channel DDR400 memory, which makes 800MHz bus useless, and second option has mobile chipset 852PM with DDR333 memory.

Because the Centrino P4 has double the L2 cache as the other laptop P4s you can add about 800Mhz to it's rating to compare it. (ie. A 1.6 Centrino is about equivelent to a 2.4 P4 @ 533 Mhz).

There is a LOT more different about the pentium-m than the Mobile P4.

Its architecture is a lot closer to the pentium 3 than the pentium 4.

Yeah, a main reason Centrino performs well because it has a higher IPC, just like the P3.

LOL Jeff😀 I was about to say go look at barton benchmarks for speed desired and that's how fast your computer will be running the pentium-m. I think the pentium-m is superior, somewhere between a Barton and A64, however it's hampered by lack of bus speed which places it about where the barton is.
