Personally:
Upsides:
-the tight integration. For people with different (albeit mainly Apple) devices, the whole "push" concept is appealing
-better interface than .Mac
-60-day free trial!
Downsides:
-like .mac, expensive
-no more iCards ;-)
-no FTP; like QueBert says, batch photo uploading could be interesting

I'd buy it just for the email/photo/calendar part, but for someone with an iPhone, a Mac, and a PC, the whole "push" thing would be a big timesaver and very convenient. It'll be interesting to see if MobileMe does work on, say, WM5.

I was just thinking, once Mobile Me becomes active in 24 hours, will they have to push a fairly large software update? I mean, .Mac is referenced in so many places and so many apps, its quite an integrated item.

This is just a guess, but Apple is a huge company I think they have this base covered lol. I could be wrong but I would imagine aside from possibly a few small launch hicups it will be very smooth.

That said I wasn't factoring in them migrating .MAC people, because I didn't know about it. So the Email address I wanted was took, I was thinking ME.COM = brand new, but oh well.

aphex is alluding to everyone's assumption that Mac OS X 10.5.4 update would include bits for MobileMe support. Since Tiger, .Mac sync is considered an OS-level feature. I haven't really thought about MobileMe much, but come to think of it, it shouldn't require a big Software Update.

Apple should be selling this thing for $49 annually IMO.

$49 would be nice, but Apple will make a KILLING even at $99. I wish there was an open source ME.COM clone I could install on my $35 a year web hosting, even if was only 75% as good. Wonder what the closest web 2.0'ish web proggy you can download or even outright buy would be. My web space/bandwidth is sitting there wasting away as it is.

I'm already receiving emails at my @me.com address. I just log in at mac.com and I can see it.

I would just use google if it would just sync up with iCal and outlook well.

Does anyone know if we have ichat accounts, that our .me counterparts are guaranteed for us? I presume yes?

Not sure i understand, iChat uses either .Mac or AIM. If you have a .Mac account, you automatically have the same name a me.com

Yeah, I have a .mac account, but it's only usable for ichat, no other functions since I don't pay for it. I was confirming I'd just just username@me.com and it'd be alright... and it still leaves the option open for me to have that username should I get an account

I woke up a few minutes ago and it's not up, I'm anxious to try this. Well I'd rather have it working than not. So I can go get some breakfast and hopefully it'll be up by lunch.

I'd surely be pissed if my primary webmail was down for an ENTIRE DAY, regardless of what they were doing. I don't know if I'd demand the $3.65 though:p

Unfortunately, this isn't helping people really believe in their service. Apple expects people to use this stuff for their every day dealings, but then they can't even transition to this new service in a clean manner. I'm just a bit miffed as to why they're having so much trouble.

I don't rely on .Mac (or MobileMe) for my important things, which I'm definitely glad for at the moment.

Been playing with it for about an hour now, initial impression is WOW!

Uploaded 66 pictures with 2 clicks of my mouse, uploading even hundreds at a time would be simple, seemed pretty fast too I went to the bathroom and when I can back it was done.

the Email is very nice, I love the interface it's so slick and responsive. I don't know how I can go back to Gmail after this. Gmail is simple and speedy, but being able to click and drag and have it feel like an actual mail client and not a web site is something I'll love.

The calendar is SWEET! I still can't get Google's Calendar sync to work at all with my Outlook 2007 Calendar, installed the new iTunes, set up the MobileME stuff and BOOM Calendar & Contacts from Outlook synced like butter. The Cal's interface is much nicer than Googles too.

The price sucks, I'm not use to paying for anything, even my internet is free thru the city. I really don't want to go back to using Gmail or Google Calendar but I also don't want to spend $99 bucks a year. Glad the trial gives me 2 months to use it. I'll never want to pay for these services but I might break down, the past hour with it I'm really liking it, and as of now I don't even have a mobile device to push it to, will be even better once I get an iPhone or something that will work with it.

*NOTE* as I finish this email ME.COM has went DOWN... haha DOH! I will give them a few days to work out the kinks. Overall I'm impressed, I love the UI and it didn't feel laggy at all, I would have to imagine a TON of people are on it right now too.

Its been up for me for the past 30-40 minutes or so, still slow but I imagine that's still just getting the bugs out.

I do have to say, SWEET ASS INTERFACE. Its perfect. Doesn't even seem like your using a web app, at all.

I hate that I like it, $99 is a lot of cash for email and a calendar for me, the Sync might not even be a big deal to me. But as you said, the Interface! I'll probably end up spending 100 bucks a year just because I like the UI

damn Apple!
