mobile internet wifi technical question

I have a highly technical question would not mind if anandtech writers download--please.
are there any significant or real differences between radio performance between the latest smartphones/or ipad withLTE and mifi devices.

I understand that obviously there are hits to battery and the number of users on the wifi generated) but what I want to know is will I be losing performance (as it relates to bandwidth/reception) or are todays smartphones (iphone5s or SG4or BBz10) actual radio for mobile internet the same or if not what are the technical differences to a LTE mifi device.

there definitely are differences - antenna and modem play a part... look @ wifi performance benchmarks

however, it's hard to do LTE benchmarks, because you can't control the environment...

wifi - set up your own router

3G/4G/LTE - set up a faraday cage to block interference, then set up your own cell signal, using a microcell? (don't think there's LTE microcells yet)
