I am in the US for the next month to renew my Visa for the UK, I have an HTC Desire S that is unlocked and I have bought a t-mobile (US) pay as you go sim card and set up a month long plan for talk text and data. but the internet doesn't seem to work.

Am I missing something obvious. I know it is a European phone, but the frequency's for the phone match the carrier. Voice calls and text messaging work, wireless internet works, but mobile internet doesn't. I tried phoneing t-mobile and they tried resetting my connection or something, but it hasn't worked.

the problem is, i got the data plan for a reason, esp. since my parents whom i'm staying with do not have wireless internet and their computer is a little more than slow.

any ideas?

T mo 3g uses AWS, which is simultaneous 1700 & 2100. Pretty sure most overseas phones only have 2100.

Do you have the mobile server/gateway settings in correctly? Also, it doesn't have AWS, so it won't do 3g on Tmobile, only EDGE.

This.
Google says the desire S is HSDPA 900 / 2100 for 3g. T-mobile uses both 1700/2100 (aka AWS). This is because 1 band is used for download and the other for upload.

ATT uses 850/1900 so you can't use ATT either for 3g. I think ATT only uses 1 of the bands either 850 or 1900 depending on the area you are in. Not 100% sure though.

this is what i had to enter, i did a soft reset of the phone first - remove battery for 5 minutes- then i entered the information listed below and then restarted the phone and everything seems to work now. If it doesn't work, then I'm sorry, I don't know what would have been done differently. Hope this works.

go to settings, wireless and networks, select mobile networks and then Access Point Names (APN). i had to add a new APN, select the menu button and touch NEW APN. call the new APN T-Mobile.

If i don't mention a setting, that means you don't need to do anything with it.

Name - T-Mobile
APN - epc.tmobile.comextendedcontrols
MMSC - http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
MMS Protocol - WAP 2.0
MCC - 310
MNC - 260
APN type - default,supl,mmsextendedcontrols

Now that is what I call a helpful message. That solution should be stickied.

still can't get it to work :-(

It seems as if the phone is connected, I see the G symbol, and arrows flashing up and down, but no internet or anything else requiring data works....

I'll give tmobile a call. Thanks for the help guys.
