I am looking at a Toshiba Satellite A305 with a mobile intel(r) 965 express chipset family video chip. When I hook it up to my 42 inch widescreen HDTV it only allows 1024x768 resolution. When I set it to allow higher resolutions and set it to the resolution native to the HDTV 1900x? (can't remember at the moment) or anything higher that the 1024 res the hdtv goes blank and the desktop stays as it should. I have looked for an update to the chipset but didn't see any. It is running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit.
I spoke to a friend who said that some intel chips don't allow updates as they are tied into the bios.
Has anyone else encountered this issue and found a cure?
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
edit-must have been tired from work when I posted this sorry
A friend of mine is trading labor. He disconnected his HDTV via S-Video without shutting down his laptop and was no longer able to use his HDTV as a secondary monitor. Fortunately this didn't kill his chipset (is S-Video hot swappable so to speak?) I was able to turn on the secondary display via Vista's version of Desktop properties. But I am unable to change the resolution to fit the native resolution of the HDTV. So I end up with a screen with black bars all the way around it on the HDTV. The laptop screen stays the same. Is this fixable?

Assuming the TV and laptop both have the proper connections, you'll need to use a VGA or DVI connection to use the higher resolutions on the TV. Having said this, I have worked with many laptops with onboard Intel video that will not output anything other than 1024x768 resolution on the external video connections (even DVI).

Thank you. I will pass that on. I gave him back the laptop and warned him that may be the case. He didn't seem to care. He was just glad to be able to use his tv with it again.
