Mobile Intel Pentium 4: Where's the info?

Seems to me that the Mobile Intel Pentium 4 (not to be confused with the Mobile Intel Pentium 4-M) is not getting the hype that it deserves. Though I haven't had the chance to play around with an Intel Pentium-M chip, I have tinkered with a Mobile Intel Pentium 4 one and think that the performance of it compares favorably with a desktop equivalent.

Based on Intel's website, the Mobile Intel Pentium 4 at 3.06GHz outperforms the Intel Pentium-M at 1.7GHz -- off of battery power. (Go here: http://www.intel.com/products/notebook/processors/mobilepentium4/index.htm?iid=ipp_note+proc_p4p& and click on "Intel Processor Performance Benchmarks" in the "Tools" box) Seeing as how Intel is really pushing the Centrinos, I find the results absolutely believable, despite the information coming from Intel's own site.

Cheaper price, comparable battery life, superior performance both on and off battery power -- where's the excitement surrounding this chip? I haven't been able to find an article about this chip on this site. Anyone have any extra information?

PS. Is anyone else at all annoyed by the naming scheme Intel has come up with for these mobile chips?
PS2. Are there really only two pages of messages for this board (the one I'm posting on right now). I can't seem to view previous pages.

Uh, the battery life is hardly comparable. Looking at the Intel chart and system specs:

1.70 GHz Pentium M system gets 399 minutes using a 71.3 Watt/hour battery
2.60 GHz Mobile Pentium 4 system gets 290 minutes using an 86.4 Watt/hour battery

The 3.06 GHz system uses a massive 95.5 Watt/hour battery. The 3.06 GHz system will obviously outperform the 1.70 Ghz Pentium M (~2600+) in raw computational speed, but this comes at the cost of the machine being heavy and having a shorter battery life.

The Pentium M isn't designed to be the fastest, it's designed to be fast and power effecient.

Intel® Pentium® M Processor 1.70 GHz
(71.3 WHr, 5.3 lbs, 1.0" thickness)
195 MobileMarks
399 Minutes => 5.6 minutes/WHr

Intel® Mobile Pentium® 4 Processor 3.06 GHz
(95.5 WHr, 7.1 lbs, 1.83" thickness)
216 MobileMarks
279 Minutes => 2.92 minutes/WHr

The 1.7GHz Pentium-M has 90% of the performance and 191% the power efficiency of the 3.06GHz Mobile Pentium 4. These two processors are aimed at different market segments. The Pentium-M is intended for thin and light machines where battery life is important. While the Mobile Pentium 4 is aimed at the larger desktop replacements.

EDIT: Welcome to the forums! :beer:

You're absolutely right, I should've explained what I meant by "comparable battery life". I said it from my perspective of how much battery power I would personally need. 399 minutes (6 hours, 39 minutes), 290 minutes (4 hours, 50 minutes), doesn't really make a difference to me, though I do realize it would to other users.

Even still, I would think people would be more interested in the chip.

And thank you, Yomicron. Loving this forum already. =)
