Mobile Developers: How do you market your app?

I just release an app on the Android Market, and naturally it was displayed under the "Just In" category. From this I was able to get 100+ downloads on the first day with a couple of good ratings, but since then the downloads have dwindled (<100 over the past 3 days) as I am no longer listed up top. I am not too concerned as the app is free and I am just doing this as a personal project, but it has made me curious how other app developers approach the marketing side. This is something that I have never really thought about in the past as I have always been on the technical side in my day job. Does anyone have any first-hand experience they can share?

It seems that good new apps for any platform get talked about in internet forums and if extremely good might even get an article written about them.

if it's a really useful or unusual app you could try sending a "hint" to the android blogs out there and they might pick it up. also post it in the apps section for your phone on xda / other forums.

If you included the name of your app in your post, you could have gotten a few more hits... :)

I updated my sig with a link to my dev blog. If you have any questions, comments, or ridicule about it you can PM me. I'd prefer to keep this thread about marketing mobile apps, which is why I started it. :)
