Mobile CPU upgrade

I have toshiba (740CDT) 166mmx cpu in my laptop. Would it be a waste of my time to get a 300mmx cpu to put in its place. How would I find out if my bio can use the higher mhz chip. The volt and all the specs are the same? Thanks for any help

IT depends... Many laptops made during that era used MMC modules which contained the processor and half of the chipset. There also a few laptops that acutally have a ZIF socket 7 in them, but these were rare. Unfortunately many other laptops were also made with MMX chips that are soldered in the motherboard. If you have the first two then you're in luck and you might be able to find a MMC module or processor on Egay. If it's soldered, sell it here on Anandtech and buy a new one.

Also assuming that the motherboard doesnt have the multipliers soldiered, or the chipset even supports more then a 233MMX (most likely the max if it is even removeable).
