Is it possible to buy a mobile socket 754 processor and use it in a desktop model?
The Pc that I currently have is the same as This One except it has one memory stick instead of two.

The reason why I want to use a mobile processor is becuase it is harder to find the 3700+ and 4000+ in the desktop versions and I would rather buy from places such as newegg or tiger direct (unless anyone else knows a reliable source?)

I plan on keeping this computer for a while even after I (eventually) build a conroe machine so I am also upgrading the video card, psu, and ram.

Could somoene also look this over to make sure that everything should run smoothly as well?
Video Card
Power Supply
Ram

Thanks :)

I just saw a 3700+ 754 in FS/T...

A mobile processor would work, but you'd have to mod the heatsink bracket to sit lower.

You might want to reconsider your PSU choice. Antec, Seasonic, OCZ, Thermaltake, Fortron... you can't really go wrong with any of them. You probably won't need more than say 500W for the system considering most companies inflate those numbers.

The RAM should be fine, as should the vid card, but ultimately what will you be doing with this machine? With a 6800XT I would think that you will be doing some gaming, but if that is teh case, you are going to want at least a gig of RAM, not just 512. If gaming isn't important, but instead you are going to be say... encoding audio and video, then drop the vid card to a 600GT, or perhaps even a 6200TC... it all depends on your video needs... and put about 2GB of RAM into teh thing.

The two main questions with computer building...
Budget
Usage

Answer those, and your other questions can be answered more effectively

Well I don't really have a set budget really.
But I will look for a new Psu
And I already have a stick of 512 in my machine so another one should be good.

And yeah I'm probably going to be playing games with it, but eventually (hopefully by next year) I am going to be getting a new conroe machine anyway so I don't want to spend -too- much money on this one.

Edit: On second thought, would a 3400+ be sufficient enough for gaming needs?

I don't recommend mobile cpus. You'll spend more on the heatsink (can't use the standard one), and for the price of the mobile cpu alone, you can get a regular retail boxed unit with a 3 year warranty. Also, most boards don't have the manual adjustment for cpu multiplier. Without it, your board will default to the lowest settings. Some boards, such as msi, do support turion cpus, which are different. They come with a locked multiplier. You'll have to contact hp to see if they support turions. They start at about $150. For only $99 (starmicro), you can get a bare athlon 64 3400 running at 2400 hertz. That's the cpu you should get, if your presario supports it. With cool and quiet enabled, your old heatsink should be fine for the 3400.

lol...tiger direct is widely considered a very unreliable source. Mainly for not shipping rebates though, the actual merchandise might be fine.

many overclockers use mobile cpu's so they can crank the voltage and get better clock speeds

If you want speed mainly for gaming, a 3200+ or 3500+ will not bottleneck any AGP video card out.

I'd get a Seasonic S12-430 for around $50 for the PSU.
