I will go after the moblie, the reason is that it's cheaper and you can get the A64 performance in some cases

------------------------------------------------------
AMD Athlon XP T-Bred B DLT3C 1700+ @ 2.3GHZ (1.775v) 400FSB = 3200+
Abit NF7-S V.2 (nForce2-U400)
Corsair TwinX XMS 3200LL 512MB @ 2-3-2-6 (2.6v)
Sapphire Radeon 9500 Pro 128MB
Antec TrueBlue 480W
Thermalright SLK-947U with 92mm Vantec Tornado @2800RPM
Antec PlusView 1000AMG
Cambridge SoundWorks MegaWorks THX 550 5.1

Probably depends what you're doing. Overall, I doubt you'd notice the dif with similar ram/vga specs.

according to sandra, my mobile running at 2600mhz beats out anything, including the FX53. she might not know what she's talking about tho. :)

p.s. the mobile+motherboard will cost you the same as the a64 cpu alone, if not less.

I'd definately go for the mobile too(I did go for the mobile). Very cheap for what you get and the 64bit cpus and boards are still changing.

thing is, i'll be paying more to get the mobile then the a64 if i wanted. i'd need to get a new psu, really good ram, and good cooling. for the a64, i could stick with stock fan, fair mobo, fair ram, and thats about it.

There was a benchmark on this posted a while back, 2.4 AX-M vs P4/A64. Do a search (Cuz i'm too lazy:)).

a 2.5 mobile should beat a stock 3000+ at certain things...

but a 2.4 ghz A64 3000+ would beat the crap out of the 2.5 mobile at most things...

its not too uncommon to hear of people hitting 2.4 ghz on stock air cooling for the A64's...

but price to performance ratio to be honest..

i myself would have to pick the xp-m over the A64...

the a64 is a SWEET system... but for me personally, i think it's slight overkill...

well either way your going to need a quality PSU, decent ram (don't need the best to reach 2.5 hell I'm doing it at 183x14) and you can get buy with a decent HSF like a alx-800

Athlon 2500 XP-M 91.00

Shuttle AN-35 $59

Geil Platinum Series Dual Channel 184 Pin 512MB(256MBx2) DDR PC-4000 $152.00

Or

Geil Value Series 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 99.00

Enermax 350W PSU $45.00

Thermalright ALX-800 $16

Decent 80mm fan 8.00

Total: $363 or $310

and if you went A64

Athlon 64 3000+ $223.00

Geil Value Series 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 99.00

Abit KV8 $104.00

Enermax 350W PSU $45

Total $471

The mobile overclocked to 2.5Ghz should beat it in almost anything. Your talking about a 700 mghz overclock, or almost a %40 increase in performance, should wipe the board clear. Im gonna wait till the Athlon 64 3700+ comes out before I look to upgrade.

You've been spreading a bit of hyperbole about these mobiles. There not all that bad ass. Yes for $77-100 nothing can touch them. But a 2.8C overclocked to 3.5 will beat mobile@2500 in alomst every benchmark and will slaughter it in encoding and that's only $175. A moblie @ 2500 is about equal to a A64-3200 and the A64 overclocked will leave it behind just like the 2.8C overclocked does.

For my buck there no reason to buy the 2.8C unless you multitask frequently but I still rank it the second best price/performance chip out there after the moblies.

Anyway I rank the higher end overclcokers like so.

1. AMD Mobile XP's $77-$100 take them to 2500-2700Mhz
2. P4C's $169-$175 take them to 3300-3500Mhz
3. A64 3000 $176 take it to 2300-2400Mhz

Go for the mobile, unless you have deep pockets. The only other option might be a mobile athlon 64. Newegg had a few yesterday for $215, but they're gone now.
