mobile celeron VS mobile pentium III

I'm trying to decide between two laptops. One uses a mobile Celeron (not sure what kind of Celeron it uses) at 1.33GHz. The other one uses a Pentium III at 850MHz. Which one would perform better given that the Celeron is faster by about 480MHz? The laptop is mainly used for word processing, internet, and programming (Java and engineering courses).

Which one is better for the tasks?

get the p3. the celeron does not have speedstep (battery saving tech).

but i think that was the C1's and C2's, not sure if that is a tualatin core, times have changed, so i am not sure anymore.

imo though, a laptop does not have to be faster than an 800MHz P3. everything that you do in moderation on a portable computer, like word processing and interent and maybe listen to music or whatever, is perfect for an 800MHz p3 with around 384MB of ram and an install of XP.

if i had to buy a laptop i know that would be what i would get, and it would be much cheaper than the higher end laptops available today.

I'd take the P3 (assuming it's the mobile version), it puts out a lot less heat, meaning the fan on your laptop wont switch on so much. In fact, in speedstep mode the fan should hardly ever be on if not stressing the system.

If I'm not mistaken, that's a Tualatin-core Celeron, and will beat the crap out of the slower P3.

Celeron:
1.33GHz
133FSB
256KB

P3
850MHz
100FSB
256KB

But that depends on the rest of the laptop equipment. Model numbers?

Celeron no question, cooler (30-35watts) improvd core, and faster in everything

The model of the laptop with the Celeron is Averatec 3120V and the one that uses PIII is the Compaq Evo N400C. Both comes with 256MB and 20GB HD. I will plan to upgrade to 384MB if I bought either one.

I will never get a Averatec laptop. I work at MicroCenter and we sell them and we get ALOT back with issues...

Thay are actually glued togeather! (you know instead of alot of screws...they se alot of glue)

At least on the newer ones.

Which model or series did you get the most returned? I was considering the 31xx series and 3200 series. Are they truly held together by glue say the upper and lower case and the parts within the case? What kinds of issues did you get for returning?

It's not cooler. The mobile P3 will consume only 27 watts maximum native speed and in speedstep throttled mode at 700mhz, only 16 watts max.

yes and improved battery life.

for the needs you described, it seems that the extra power (and less battery life) will not help you at all.
