Mobile Audiophiles... Lend me your ears!

My headunit broke (just put it in the other day, damnit) my mom said for my birthday she'll gimmie $300 towards a new one... So I went looking on ebay and found a Kenwood KDC-MP922 for ~279. I looked at Alpine's stuff, but they're ugly! Can anyone recommend me anything better than this Kenwood for the price? Thanks!

Bill

Alpine makes great soiunding stuff but their design usually sucks. Eclipse usually looks great and sounds good too.

RMA your old headunit and keep the money towards speakers and subs

I got it for free, and I already have audiobahns all around... I dont have subs though...

I really like the design of the kenwood, the Alpines don't do anything for me... Plus, if I read it right, you have to run an extra wire to the battery for their higher end stuff? Which I really don't feel like doing either..

try http://www.discountjungle.net for low prices on stuff. Personality I wouldn't waste my money on Kenwood. If you are going to blow that much money might as well get an Alpine or Pioneer or Clarion. Eclipse is even better but they are usually more.

Word of advice, don't buy Kenwood. They don't last long.

😕 I've had one since July of 2000 without a single problem. Care to elaborate. I also have a Kewood changer and amp. Guess we'll see what happens😛

they are of fair to poor quality.

Kenwoods not bad.. I would go with a Alpine or Pioneer. I just got a Alpine 9815 off of ebay for 345 bucks. Its going to be an awesome deck. I would recomened Eclipse, but I don't know enough about them. Although alpine arent the best looking decks, they have been rock solid for me.

I loved my kenwood, nothing but good things to say. Of corse I wasnt using the headunit for the speakers, had amps running it all, so I have little to say about it's sound quality.

if you can wait a little, alpine's newest HU's are coming out, as are pioneer's. Otherwise the 9815 is a fine choice from alpine. It has time correction, fast mp3, and a good display.

I just can't justify getting 9815 over the 9813. 99% of the time you won't even use the extra features on the 9815. Maybe the first 2 weeks of ownership you'll play around with those features, but after that.. it's just look good on paper.

I hear ya, but I like the blue leds, ALOT more than the green ones. I think they could get annoying over time. The price difference wasn't that much, so I figured I would just spend the extra money.

eclipse is better than alpine, but they cost more $$$. Plus I don't think they sell their highend units online at all. If you have a dealer that can get you a decent price than go for it. But be prepared to spend $400+.

Everyone is talking about the quality of the Kenwood being poor, care to elaborate?

I've been told by a few (yesterday) in person that Kenwoods are high quality.. Not sure what to believe... I picked out that Kenwood, because of the price and because of it's looks... alpines are ugly 🙂 If alpine had a deck that looked like kenwood's KDC-MP922 then I'd be all over it.

there is no "this brand is bad, this one is good" with this kind of thing (except Bose 🙂)
just find a review of the product you want

All sound the same there's a guy out there with both a $10000 amplifier challenge and head unit challenge, buy on MTBF and the specs and features you want.

I had the Mp822, before it was stolen 🙁

If i did it again, i wouldn't buy it. Not to say that it was terrible, but for the price i probably would have gone for a Pioneer head unit. That or an Alpine. The fit and finish just seems to be tighter on with the latter two. But, Alpine did have dog-slow cd ejecting speeds, which would sway me to Pioneer (not sure if Pioneer is that fast either, hah).
