Mobile Athlon 2400+ or AMD 64 2800+...which do you choose?

Ok, I am confused about a system upgrade I want to do.

Here are two choices for processors that I am thinking about (suggest otherwise if you feel so):
AMD Mobile Athlon XP 2400+ OR
AMD 64 2800+

Which one would you get if :

1. you are upgrading from a P3 500Mhz system
2. Need to burn("back-up") DVDs and
3. Need to make the system into a PVR(like TiVo) with a Hauppauge 250 card.
4. Money is an issue
5. I want the system to last me at least 2 years...u can see, I am still on P3!!!!

The $60 difference in price is what I am wondering about.

If you were in my place, would you rather spend that extra $60 into getting an "additional" 512Mb memory for a total of 1Gig or would you go for the 64bit processor based on what I want to do.

Will I not see a big enough difference from a P3 to the Mobile??

Thanx for your help everyone. :)

thats a tough call....both options have distinct advatages. i would have to say go for the A64 though. it gives you a longer upgrade path than the ram, and you can upgrade the ram cheaply at a later date

You would see a huge difference upgrading from a p3 to that mobile. If you don't play games, I say save the 60 bucks, buy the mobile, get more ram, and overclock it.

well, these are both different answers....both make sense to me...damn..more confused now :p

I do not play games on the PC anymore after I got my Xbox. But I do want to be able to use the computer whilst recording TV...does that change things?

How easy is it to overclock?? Any guide you can point me to???

it is easy to overclock. but it looks like you will be using this for everyday tasks, encoding etc.

I would go with the A64. 60 dollars now will go A LONG way. This computer will last you for a long time. where as the xp i would say 5 years absalute max.

Cook1, dunno why my PM doesn't work..will look into it.

Ok..one last question before I decide...if I get the AMD Mobile..will I be able to use the motherboard to upgrade later?? Or will I have to get a whole new mobo?

512MB memory should be enough right for what I want to do??

Thanx

What I would say exactly, plus I believe the A64 2800+ would perform much better than the mobile 2400+. Also $60 spent now, could save you an extra $300 later. Right now, it's best to think ahead, and buy what you can.

Thanx to all who helped me out...I am going to go ahead with the 64 now. The way I buy computers, I figure this one will last me for another 2 years at least.
