mobile 9700 wtih doom 3

I plan to get a laptop with the mobile 9700 gpu along with a Pentium M 1.7ghz coupled with 512mb ram. This is what I'll be bringing to college and I was wondering if doom 3 is playable on it. I'm not a heavy gamer but I do like it when frames are kept above 30...

I get a little under 30 FPS with my 8500 on my P4 2.4 desktop, so I'm sure your Banias with a mobile 9700 will easily hit over 45.

I haven't played D3 on my 9600 yet, but from what I've heard a 9600 can be sufficient (and a 9700 is just an OCed 9600). However, there are a couple of features that determine how smooth it will play:
Video Ram: 64MB isn't very sufficient, but will get the job done. 128MB is better
RAM: Whether you have 64MB or 128MB VRAM, I've heard that having 1GB system RAM really reduces stuttering.
HDD Speed: I would imagine having a 7200RPM drive would also ensure responsiveness in the game, as some data will probably have to be cached to the HDD.

If you want to be serious about D3, spring the extra monay & get 1GB. Otherwise, you're good to go! Enjoy!

Doom 3 runs beautifully on my T41p (P-M 1,7Ghz/1Gb/Ati Firegl T2 128Mb). The FireGL T2 is basically Radeon 9600 core. It has 8 pipelines, and I think the basic 9600/9700 only has 4 enabled (not sure though).
