group III vs group IV oils

hmm, i wonder if i've semi wasted $60 in my two boxes of stashed M1.

There's some irony in this story, a decade ago mobil sued castrol for marketing grp iii oils as synthetic. Now 0w-30 german castrol is tested to be predominantly grp iv while the mobil 1 product is not.

my mechanic told me to stay away because it was not real synthetic. He got his information from some automotive study.

Also BMW does not recommend Mobil 1 and I believe you shouldnt use Mobil 1 in your BMW. All BMWs take synthetic only.

Where do you get that?

BMW does list Mobil 1 among its recommended lubricants

You sir are right. I was wrong.

M1 EP 15W-50

Mobil 1 Extended Performance
You've never seen an oil like this before. Mobil 1® Extended Performance is a high-endurance motor oil designed for longer service intervals. It is a fully synthetic formulation that helps extend engine life, reduce oil breakdown and minimize engine wear -- all while helping to keep your engine clean. Improvements that add up to exceptional protection for 15,000 miles. Guaranteed.

The regular synthetic non-extended performance M1 oil's should be alright....

Supposedly that guy later tested a batch of regular 5w-30 with similar findings.

Besides, EP M1 is supposed to be a premium product, it costs more than regular M1.

Tried to read through that enormous thread and lost interest....I hate motor oil discussions.....but I use Mobil 1 exclusively, so I should probably understand what they were talking about....or maybe I'll just go to lunch instead....
