I was at walmart this morning. I saw a 5 quart Mobil 1 oil jug that states it protects cars as long as 15K! Its the extended protectiion brand. Its about 20 bucks for a jug.

I was curious if anyone uses it? And if they do change their oil every 15k or 1year.
Im sorta tempted to go for it, since oil changes are about 30 bucks everytime i go. (I live in an apartment and they dont allow oil changes)

do it about every 7K miles that should be best. 15K stretching it, and you dont want sludge, although Mobil 1 is normally the second best Synthetic oil.

Don't leave oil in your crankcase that long unless you know exactly what you are doing, or are doing/have done oil analysis.

I have a mental problem with leaving oil in my car for that long, no matter what it is..

Honestly, me too.

I wouldn't ever do it blindly. Oil analysis is a must.

Oil analysis is the only real way to tell how your oil is performing in your engine with your very specific personal driving habits and environmental conditions.

Anything else is opinion and anecdotal.

I just let my car go about 8000 miles on regular oil. I drove it about 5000 miles and was getting ready to change it (I pushed it out of laziness). I had just gotten the car from my sister and I asked her when the last time she changed the oil, she dug around andfound it was about 3000 miles before I started driving it. ick.

Meh.

If the oil isn't breaking down, this would be effective enough.

There's no real way to tell, though.. other than oil analysis. IMO, their word isn't good enough.

Gawd, forget about your oil and use a quality oil filter.

Think about it. Any and all oil is rendered useless if it has solid particles in it. Your filters are more important than your oil, since all oils will lubricate properly when new. It's just a matter of how long it lasts after that.

Remember that changing your oil serves two purposes. Rather, there are two things you are trying to avoid.

Oil breakdown, and solid particles. It doesen't matter if your oil can last 20,000 miles if it's going to be saturated with wear causing particles due to a piece of sh!t oil filter.

I've been using the standard Mobil 1 synthetic in my car (changed every 4000 miles). Would it be worth the $4 premium to use this new kind as it has more additives? I will still probably keep changing it every 4000 miles.

Just run an oil analysis. It varies per car. Mobil 1 is great oil. Some of their oils seem to sheer down faster than others though (ie. 0w40).
