MMO's why do I play?

Just got into MMO's about a year ago with WoW. Then tried AoC. Even like Disney's Pirates. But my question is why do I continue to play. Single player story lines are much better, in general.

I think its the almost infinite play time with limit story versus a well thought out plot with limited play.

Now I want to try Warhammer but am waiting for Fallout 3.

For a long time, I was very resistant against MMORPG's for sub. fees and time factors and enjoyed more single player oriented games with a developed story such as Baldur's Gate and Fallout.

I have since been playing LOTRO and can honestly say I am hooked to a genre I looked down upon! Maybe its because they offered the option of buying out your subscription or the fact that it is based on Tolkein and my favirote trilogy of books or the fact that my wife plays the game with me justifying long hours hunched over my digital creation!

I personally think that LOTRO has caught my interest and will continue to do so because it has many elements that I loved from traditional Single Player RPG's which have and engaging stroy but improve upon that by adding the scope of most MMO's. I am happy where I am at and have yet to be bored of it going 7 months strong.

You have not even touched any REAL MMO's....WoW is good, but you are missing out on a lot, not enough to call yourself a real MMO player!

I tend to be on of those epeen syndrome people.

I like to be the best. To school people. To be looked up at etc etc..

I am just a very competitive person, honest to god, I play sports competitively etc.

I have no friends left to game with at home for console games.

Most of my friends play MMO's.

Character progression, PvP are huge in my eyes..there are "Some" as you mentioned single player games that work for me..but for the most part MMO's are what I love to play.

You can call me elitist, but I cannot agree with you that all MMO's are the same.

I only do it to play with my friends. Every time they quit, I quit too. When they re-join, I re-join too. It's a vicious circle of addiction and enablement.

Single player games can be compared to reading a book, watching a movie, etc.

MMO's can be compared to meeting up with your friends on a regular basis and doing something [bowling, playing sports, camping, etc].

Compared to yes, hopefully not replacing


Its the social aspect that keeps you hooked to MMOs. Even a very good single player game, if you play it for long enough, there is only a limited amount of new content to be found, even with AI and "adaptive" game play features. Whereas with online games, there is a limitless amount of new interaction because there are real people doing their own thing in the game. Things are just more interesting when you play with friends.

+1 to that, same here. I played diablo 2 for a bit again when d3 was announced cause everyone else did, haha.
