I play an MMORPG, and as its really the only thing I play, I thought I wasn't too interested in "top of the line" hardware, however something has caused it to be quite slow as of late, despite changing ALL settings in game, from textures, to models, to shaders, to anything.. hardly anything makes a dent in the FPS except enabling shadows in the game(FPS to single digits now please).
FPS in the game is fine until viewing other players/enemies/etc.
Other gamers playing the same game report "no lag" even in large gatherings of players, with 6200s and even 5500 Geforce cards. They also have Athlons running at 2000mhz - 2500mhz(not Athlon64s, but XPs)
To make a long story short, I have reinstalled around 9 different driver versions, reinstalled video drivers about 15 times, reinstalled directx at least 5-6 times, defragmented, trimmed the startup files, switched from AVGFree to Avast, turned all my in game settings from medium to absolute low, consulted with the game company's technical support, consulted with friends, and have yet to find a solution.
As posted in my sig...
Gigabyte K8NSC-939
AMD Athlon64 San Diego Core 3700+
2gb Kingston dual channel memory PC3200 kit
EVGA 4x/8x AGP Geforce6600 256mb
1280x1024 resolution on VX922 Viewsonic
Besides video driver reinstall, spyware/adware/startup cleaning, and other things i've tried 10 times or more, are there any other software possibilities that could be causing much slower performance out of the 6600 or system as a whole?
I have considered the possiblity that the 6600 is just too weak, but that is hard to believe when everyone tells you "no, my 6200 with a 2200 processor and 1gb ram runs lag free even in the worst possible situations(well except shadows). Your 3700/2gb/6600 should rock"
I know... I should be running a dual core system with 8gb ram and SLI 8800s... I just am not a millionare. I may have 100-200$ to drop into a card soon, but I'm hoping its software related.
Software running during game:
Avast Antivirus(Game folder excluded from resident and test scans)
Tiny Personal Firewall
Windows Processes
Mozilla Firefox
The MMORPG is Everquest.
Any advice/help is appreciated.
