I recently decided that it would be a good idea to force myself to acquire the taste for scotch. So, my friends and I bought a bottle of Johnnie Walker Red Label and started drinking it. Let me tell you, most of the people I told about this plan said that scotch tasted horrible and that it's not worth learning to like it... but after one sitting, I can say that I don't really dislike it that much. What do you people think about scotch? What's your favorite brand?

Let's hear it for Scotch!

The Glenlivet is good, but a bit too pricey to drink often...

I can stomach scotch only after I dilute it with water. The good stuff is expensive...I'd rather drink fine wine.

warms the soul, expensive habit though. Try out a sampler pack of premiums. Amazing how different they are.

Another vote for glenlivet, i like the 18 year bottle, very smooth. 12 year isn't bad in the french oak variety.

I'd like to try johnny blue label..but 200 bucks for a bottle is too rich for me

I love scotch!

My favorite so far is Genfiddich 12 year. I've been wanting to try the 18 year, but it runs around $45/bottle and I'm saving buying it for a special occasion.

Stay away from brands such as Dewar, etc. You'll really appreciate the difference a single malt scotch offers. It's worth it to spend some extra money for a good brand.

<< I'm too young to drink scotch. For me it's always been an "adult" drink, I'm only 24, not adult enough yet :) >>

hehe, I am only 21 though. I want to get a head start on getting to like it. :)

I owned a bar a while back and whenever I wanted to nurse a drink for an hour or so
I would drink scotch
I know the spiel about differences in brands but....
why try to develop a taste for something when rum goes down so smooth from the get go :)
That's like learning to smoke, after a while you may enjoy it but it's hell at first.......why bother

Scotch, like women, is illegal unless its aged 18 yrs. If you must, Oban will scratch your young urge.

Scotch is definitely an acquired taste. If you are working on acquiring that taste, do yourself a favor and try some of the specialty scotches from Balvenie. They are aged in various types of casks to impart additional flavors. The Balvenie Doublewood and Portwood are especially good. Glenfiddich also makes a similar line of specialty scotches.

A good "beginner scotch" is Highland Park. It is mellow and VERY smooth.

Also, remember this rule:

Only put water or ice in it if it is a blended scotch. Single malts should be enjoyed neat.

actually you need to put a VERY small amount of water in any scotch in order to release the full flavor and aroma. tastes the best that way. and the reason you put ice or a large amount of water in a blended scotch is because it tastes like crap. :D

I have a 50 year old bottle of scotch that I am going to open on my birthday this month, that should taste good.
