Well my stock fan was just getting too annoying so I decided to get the well known vf700.

I ordered it from ZZF on tuesday and got it Today.

This was my first time ever installing a new HSF on a gpu.

The previous night I took off the stock fan and cleaned up the thermal goop with 99% alccohol and coffe filters (I got the info from reading someones post about the filters).

I thought they put just a little too much.

So anyways I finished up cleaning and saw my first naked gpu core, well besides my really old geforce 2.

Thus today I installed it with some ease except my hands were shaky. I thought the hardest part was screwing in the hsf itself since the fan was directly above the screw holes in my situation.

Also because of the back bar I couldn't get one ram hs to fit perfectly.

When it was all said and done I was very eager to test it out.

My results were pretty good but, not super.

Stock @ 540/580
Idle: 43-47 depending on my room temp
Load: 70 - 73

Zalman @ 540/580
Idle: 35
load: 64-65

It probably would have been better with AS5 or something.

Do Ati cards run hotter than Nvidia cards? Just curious since ive never owned one.

I recently put an NV5 silencer on my 7800GT and my temps are pretty much about 48-50C idle(Because I put my fan speed down to 25% while in windows) and about 44-46C load(Because I have it set to go to 80% fan speed in games).

I ask if they run hotter because I was under the impression zalman coolers cooled better than the NV5 did. You still are at 65C at load, that seems high to me for a copper heatsink thats supposed to be better than an NV5. I dont own an ATI card though, maybe temps are higher for those. But the load on my 7800gt with NV5 is like 44-46C.

I think they do. I compared my results with others at hardocps and it's about the same.

Mines the ALCU btw.

I used to OC my 16 pipe gto to 580mhz and it would only run at 60C load with a zalman vf700cu, and with AS5. If you put too much thermal paste or have poor case airflow then your temps wont be as good. I wish I could put my zalman on my x1900xtx, but after feeling the blast furnace heat it exhausts under load, I wouldnt want to dump all that inside my case.

X800/850 XT/PE are 130nm cards that run 500-540 MHz stock

7800GT is a 110nm part that runs 400MHz stock (but OCs really well)

anyways last night I moved my VF700 from my 9800pro to my XT and I had the same situation, they put way too much gunk with the stock hsf . I think that's why these cards run hot :p Mine still won't overclock at all, although I don't have any ramsinks on it, that could be why.

Edit now I'm getting 32C idle and around 60 load, which is a drop of over 10C
