mmm click of death

i was attempting to run two instances of my favorite game when something catastrophic happened. tried to restart the computer because thats what anyone in their right mind would to after a bunch of programs crash, right? well the hard drive is getting absolutely hammered. so after a few minutes of attempting to shut down i hear a click. like the sound of the head hitting something inside the drive. i get it turned off, restart, oh it can't find windows. so i attempt a repair of the installation... which can't be found. so i try reinstalling windows. it copies the files and clicks several times doing so, but gets through that just fine. computer restarts... blue screen before hitting the desktop! ctrl-alt-del and i get:
Disk I/O error: Status = 00001020
Disk I/O error: Status = 00001020

Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<windows 2000 root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

swweeeet!

looks like its time to call maxtor...

the only reason i'm not extremely uberpissed about this is that the install is only a couple weeks old and so only the really new things aren't sitting on the old disk.

i wonder if the freezer trick would work?

First...Is your favorite game solitaire? How do you run 2 instances of a game?

Second..IIRC, the freezer trick may work temporarily...but more likely than not, it'd be better just to grab a new drive.

IIRC, the freezer trick works because the cold shrinks the mechanics in the drive a bit, giving you a little more leeway in terms of the moving parts. So, I imagine it'd work if you slaved it to a working system to get your mail. As soon as it thawed, tho, the mechanical problem you had would return.

seagate

i'm also in the midst of a Maxtor RMA, and I chose the advanced option simply because I don't have another hard drive available hehe..all you do is send your drive back to them in the packaging the replacement comes in.

Hmm, I need to RMA a drive.

Freezer trick, eh? Hmm, worth a shot since there are some family pictures on there that I never made backups of. Any other possibilities for recovery? There's a click in the drive and it just can't get up to speed in spinning.

Just my luck, one of my Maxtors died today. Had some fairly important documents in there as well. 🙁

This sucks. Gotta check out hot deals now...

People think I'm crazy for backing up every week. Where here is a prime example of why. I feel your pain dude, I've been there and it sucks. I had to reconstruct a large portion of my accounting data for my company last year because of hdd failure. Doh!

my maxtor was originally a 40gb. sent in rma, back comes 60. 🙂 need to rma that, back comes 60. need to rma that, back comes 80 🙂

i dont blame maxtor for my hard drive problem. it was after the 80gb came back that i realized my harddrive had been running mostly at 65C. Now that i fixed hte problem, it's running around 50C.

I have a maxtor which is operating fine, but lately I've been hearing a vibrational noise on occasion. Its definitely not a click.

The powermax software says the drive is okay, and the warranty expires in June. Should I be concerned?

I have an IBM 75GXP that's been ticking away for 2 years now..... Seems that I have one of the few that didn't go tits up after a couple of months.

*knock on wood*

I took mine apart, voiding RMA 🙁 I should have known better!
