The team on the field:
Wouldn't visors be cooler since it allows all the heat to escape?

Likely hat sales vs visor popularity #1 followed by tradition.

Too bad Costanza didn't think of this instead of cotton uniforms.

To keep from getting a sunburnt scalp.
Yes, and the noon-day sun shining on your scalp strikes me as hotter than shining on your BB cap. Myself, I stopped wearing BB caps. I like to wear a hat that protects my ears and neck.

But, you know, BB is a pretty violent game sometimes, I don't mean collisions and such like football, baseball, soccer, basketball, supposedly those kinds of things aren't happening in BB. But action can be fast and furious and a visor's more apt to not stay on your head as well as a BB cap. Then, there's the tradition aspect. Although you look at photos of Babe Ruth and wonder, because nobody in major league baseball looks remotely like that guy.

So how do you catch a fly ball with a visor? I think it’s fair to catch a ball with your cap…?

I thought the OP was referring to full-face visors.

Was wondering if the idea was protection against getting smacked in the face with the ball, or as an alternative to masks to satisfy pandemic regulations.

This sort of thing

What I want to know is why they wear those awful polyester uniforms. They should switch to cotton because it's a breathable fiber.

Few things.

Caps allow for easier recognition through color for fans in the nosebleed seats of who is on the field as caps are suppose to be brighter colors for the team. Also caps are easier to display bigger logos on as well for recognition.

Caps are better for keeping cool in the heat than visors. When the ambient air is hotter than the air coming off the body, then creating an air barrier around the body is cooler. This is the same concept of why people in the desert wear big flowing robes to keep cool instead of running around naked.

Unless you're in Cali. I thought the whole point of people going to the desert out there was to get naked.
