Out of curiosity I was trying to look up where Kenny Lofton ranked as an all-time base stealer.

What I found so far was this page which indicates that Barry Bonds was actually a few bases ahead of him. I guess i've only been really been paying attention to Bonds the last few years but it surprised me.

Wasn't Pete Rose a big stolen base guy too? His name isn't there.

Maybe someone knows a more interesting stat page?

Barry Bonds was A LOT skinnier and mobile before (hence all the steroid comments). He actually started off as a lead off hitter, and progressively moved down the line up to the clean up spot eventually. He's pretty darn fast for such a big dude. Hes also a few years older than Lofton, hence the narrow lead.

No one will ever beat Ricky Henderson. Not many players steal bases a whole lot. Perhaps in the future, but i don't see it being broken.

I hope Henderson elects going into the Hall of Fame as an Oakland A's player.

Soriano will.

You sure Soriano can do that? Think about this. If he manages to average, say, 60 SB per year, it would take him 23 years to break Rickey's record! I don't think we'll see that record broken anytime soon, even if the running game makes a comeback.

No he won't.

Teams don't use the steal as much as they used to. Soriano will never even come CLOSE to breaking that record.

I don't think anyone will unless the game changes again.

I remember when Gehrig and Maris's records were "unbeatable".

The game has changed. Soriano is not going to steal more than 40-45 bases a year.

Henderson - 1403 Stolen Bases
Soriano - 86 Stolen Bases

Soriano is averaging 43 stolen bases over the past two years while playing in 150+ games per season.

So, Soriano will need 1318 SBs (as of right now.. Henderson is still playing) to break his record. At that pace, he would have to average stealing 43 bases a year for the next 30+ years.

It isn't going to happen. Soriano's OBP is way too low for him to even think about stealing 60-70 bases a year. He only walked 28 times last year.

Give him a chance to learn the game a bit more. This past season was only his second! He's still a kid.

Even if he has a 400 on base pct, given the way the game is played now I dont think there will ever be another person that steals 100+ bases in a season.

Not only is Henderson the greatest Base Stealer of all time, he was also the greatest lead off hitter of all time. Soriano could eclipse him in the latter category but he will have to play at a high level for at least 15 years to be considered better than Henderson.

BTW, doesn't Henderson own the record for the most lead off Homeruns in the History of MLB?

He can learn the game all he wants. I would bet everything I own that Soriano will never break the all-time SB record. I am not saying it will never be broken, but Soriano is not going to be the guy. I can't see a guy in the league that can steal 80 bases a year.

Yes, he does own that record. I believe it is over 100 times now.
