he's over 500 HR and should exceed 3000 hits this season. only the fourth player EVER to accomplish that.

is he a DEFINITE First ballot HOFer? HOFer but not necessarily first ballot? not good enough for the HOF.

interesting question.

That should be a no brainer...

Just a question of which team will he go in as

When I think of him I don't think of a top tier all time great player. I dunno, it just seems that he is one of those guys that has impressive numbers because of how long and consistent he has played, not because he ever put up spectacular numbers. I don't follow baseball that closely though, so I could be wrong.

you have to admit tho, 4 all star appearances, 3 gold gloves. pretty quiet for a quy who is probably one of the most consistent hitters of the game for the last 20 years.

he has been overshadowed no matter where he was. shoot, even Juan Gon got more press than palmeiro.

His career numbers will probably get him in 1st ballot. I never think of him as one of the dominate players of his era though.

Aaron was that way also.

palmeiro had 4 season with 40+ HR and 6 seasons of 30+ HR.

not bad.

I'm not sure he'll be a first ballot guy because that's an honor usually reserved for someone who dominated the position for a stretch of his career. I think he should be a HOFer though...heck, if Dale Murphy is considered on the edge, Palmeiro should be a no-brainer.

First ballot, no doubt. The people who vote for HOFers know what Rafi's brought to the game, plus he's one of the most respected people in MLB among coaches, players, and press. He'd get my vote.

JuanGon had 5 and 7...respectively.

Palmeiro just managed to stay healthy and be one of the top 2-3 players on every team he played for.

yep, first ballot no doubt. You can basically be assured 30+ dingers a year with 100 rbis and gold glove defense. Not flashy but still impressive.

JuanGon had better numbers the seasons he was healthy.

Palmeiro had a pretty good career tho.

i guess the comparison would be Palmeiro and McGriff.

I doubt McGriff makes it. Not for quite awhile at least.

interesting tho. palmeiro has played the 2005 season and mcgriff went out at the beginning of 2004. they both started the same year, 1986.

if you take out the first seasons and last season of both players, their averages are very very close.

RP 30 hr / season, FM 28.9 hr / season
RP 98.5 RBIs / season, FM 90.7 RBIs / season

and they both hit just over .290 for those seasons respectively.

The longevity and consistency make him a first ballot Hall of Famer...

Look at Griffey Jr & Big Hurt... Injuries slowed what would have been first ballot inductees.

ya, Big Hurt pretty much describes the end of his career. of course he played 4 fewer years in the MLB so far than Palmeiro. not likely he will match Raphies last 4 seasons tho.

Yeah, their seasonal averages are pretty close. The difference is that Palmeiro was better later in his career, whereas McGriff was a pretty much the same for his entire career. Overall I would say Palmeiro had more great seasons than McGriff.

I would say Griffey still has a shot at being a 1st ballot guy. He basically dominated an entire decade at a defensive oriented position. Plus he's not quite done playing, I can see him getting to 600 home runs before he retires.

griffey is at 516 HR with 3 below average seasons he can top 600 HR. how could he not be a First time HOFer? especially considering his position. CF is a skill defensive position.
