MLB: June 15, All 10 Braves starters were HOME GROWN. Braves in 2nd now, primed to win the division.

AMAZING.

sure the braves lost to Texas 9 to 5 that day.

but they had SEVEN in the starting lineup that were rookies, SEVEN. Pete Orr, Kelly Johnson, Ryan Langerhans, Andy Marte, Brian McCann, Wilson Betemit and Kyle Davies.

this is a team with one of the best farm systems in all the major leagues.

glory days??

nah, i'd rather take what i'm seeing now. even with 7 rookies in the starting lineup, i still wouldn't count the braves out of the division race. and this year, who knows what might happen in the playoffs.

how does a team start to recover from losing THREE very very good starters?

Hudson and Hampton woud have been 1 or 2 on almost any staff in the MLB. and Thompson is a good #3.

all 3 of these guys are out, hudson for another 10 days or so and hampton and thompson out for 2 months.

The Altanta Braves were one of the most overrated teams according ESPN's Who's Number 1? tv show.
Yet they win their division every year, even when they aren't supposed to, or lost "too many" key players.

Bobby Cox is the most underrated manager in MLB.

and Leo is the best pitching coach in the majors..hands down. No other coaching staff has taken a revolving door of players and kept them on top for as long as those guys have. Hate or love the braves...they do it year in and year out.

having all those rookies isn't a good thing. it usually means your teams not doing so well.

what it means is that 6 starters are on the DL.

including the likes of Hudson, Chipper Jones, Hampton and Thompson.

btw, you missed a very important part of my OP.

name 2 other teams in the MLB that can start all 10 players with HOMEGROWN players.

the future looks very good for the braves.

other fans of the NL East teams not named the braves, how can any true Baseball fan hate the braves?

they do everything the right way. they don't try to buy championships, they don't do it with Free Agents. the GM is one of the shrewdest gms in all of baseball, their Pitching coach is amazing. Cox is an NL version of Joe Torre.

Awesome club, classy organization.
I love watching the Braves. They farm some of the greatest talent in the majors...consistantly.

Almost any team besides the Yankees can, all you do is promote your AAA team and most of the time they're homegrown. And they'll have the same result as the Braves did. A loss.

braves are 7-3 their last 10 games with 8 or 9 homebrown players and 6 or 7 rookies every game.

not really, the A's are last right now and bringing up homegrowns won't help them improve either or they would have already done so.

I love your enthusiasm about baseball Pgold....but none of those guys are even highly regarded prospects - Langerhans is a nice player, but Bettemit, Marte, and those other guys aren't much to get excited about - I do like their 1b - whose brother is also a top prospect, but their other young players don't do much for me.

I'll agree that Leo is the best pitching coach I've ever seen - Jaret Wright from last season is exhibit 1 in that discussion, but there have been plenty of others.

Overall though, I think if you look at any team that had 7 starters on the DL, you'll find that most of the players in their lineup are homegrown, it's not like teams trade for other players when guys go on the DL. I don't believe their opening day lineup had 7 homegrown players in it.

OF was Jordan, Jones, Mondesi - 1 homegrown there.
IF was Giles, Furcal, Chipper, Laroche - all 4 homegrown
Estrada at C - total of 5 homegrown players in the starting lineup, not including pitchers - probably above average

Just because they are home grown doesnt mean they are good. it could just mean no one wanted them in a trade. Funny how the first year they are using home grown people is the first year they arent a cinch to win the division.

Andy Marte is regarded as one of the top hitting prospects in all of baseball, actually.
