posting in yet another "I hate professional sports!" threads.
Can somebody post a religion thread next?
Then maybe a "I know how to raise your kids better than you" thread?

I want to go for a trifecta today.

I live in NY and keep having to listen to all these people tell me how great the "Yanks" are all the goddamn time. When I ask why I should support the Yankees they say you have to be proud of your home team. Then I go look at the roster and most of them are not from NY much less the United States.

I have to ask, how is a bunch of guys imported from the DR who can barely speak English, the "home team"?

I could really get behind baseball if it were a rule that you have to be at least born in the state you represent or have lived there for, say, a decade. That way when the Yanks beat the Sox it would actually mean NY beat Boston. As it is today it's "our imported players beat your imported players". Might as well watch the computer play itself in MLB 2K12 in that case.

Wouldn't it be much cooler if teams actually consisted of players from the states the represent?

Would you think it is fair if you could only work for companies in your home state or town?

I hate baseball. I live in Central NJ so all I hear about is the Phillies. I hope a nuke lands on Citizen's Bank Park

I would be fine with that so long as Hallady, Rollins, Utley and Lee get out in time, and then sign with the Mets.

:)

DR? Dont you mean DRC - Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Just because you know what DR means, does not mean everyone else does.

actually, most people with a first world education recognize DR as the Dominican Republic.

They should do it like European Soccer where you need have a certain number of home grown players. In fact all sports should do this, helps to bolster pride in your local teams when you know the players are from your own backyard.

KT

so that means if and when Puerto Rico is granted an MLB team, they will destroy everyone, being that the PR and DR players would be beholden to them.

:(

anyway, I think that's a really bad idea, especially when you consider that unlike all other pro leagues, baseball already has it's own well-established "home system." The farm system.

If anything, they should focus on keeping and developing the players that they draft and sign. The Phillies used to be that team--that finds success in developing their own home family--until a few years ago when they started the Boston/NY route of buying championships (hard to criticize them; it's generally the only way to win).

The Brewers mostly look to be that team right now, but who knows how long before they actually see some serious revenue and perpetuate the issue.

If they have the best players, why not? It will be all the more exciting when the home team beats them, like when the US beat Brazil in the World Cup.

um. I know. that's obvious to anyone that pays attention.

It's that fact that you single this out as your major hangup.

hence--xenophobic racist.

Oh shut up, troll. Also, I didn't know Dominican Republic was a race.

what the...I was making fun of you. :colbert:

but if that were to ever happen, the reality wouldn't be that much different. One team might have priority over homegrown players, but there is still the issue of money.

While Boston and New York will have the money to pay Pujols and Ramirez and Ortiz and Pudge, and Abreu, et all, the PR team will be left with dudes like Endy Chavez.

It's tradition. The Yankees are an American icon, period. Their grandparents grew up watching them and their parents watched them. I'm not going to knock any fan who loves baseball (even if it is the Yankees).

Just like the thread about people giving too many props to our military, the truth of the matter is that there are a lot of assholes in the military who don't deserve that respect but it's all about the uniform and what it represents. Just like the Yankees, of course there are assholes like ARod and half of them can barely speak English (Mariano Rivera). They are the present day players but the uniform they represent is just as American as our military. We could go into all types of discussions about how the Yankees do buy the best players but they are still an American icon, and the most visible franchise in baseball. They aren't much different than our country (i.e. we suck up all the best talent in the world no matter the ethnicity and pay them the most) so you can either hate the player or hate the game. But you probably don't hate the game if you just made a thread about it. ;)

Local pride is not xenophobia. Way to twist it and miss the entire point.

baseless local pride may as well be.

it's like, someone says ' _____ government service/action/expenditure/tax seems kind of silly, perhaps we should think this through and come up with a better solution.'

reply 'YOU JUST HATE AMERICA!'

people who root for (and refer to) their home team as if they are both founder and general manager, as well as head coach, are friggin' annoying. picking a favorite sports team based on where you happen to live is as silly as picking a religion based on...well, nevermind.

Baseball is interminably boring. In what other sport do a majority of the fans get up and leave before it's over?

then why not bitch about Jeter being born in NJ, moving to living and growing up in MI, or A-Rod who grew up in in the DR & Miami (lived in NYC until age 4), AJ Burnett from Arkansas, Sabathia from CA, Texiera from Maryland, Nick Swisher from Ohio, etc...

there is no local pride on any team. You called out (intentionally or not) the DR and the hoards of "brownies" invading your local team while ignoring everyone one else on the team, and throughout baseball, not being local.

so...is "local" the USA--hence: xenophobia--or is it something else?

You've also left out an important part: players get to go to whoever pays them the most. Yankees are able to thus buy a championship or near championship team every year.
I have a solution to the problem. For every dollar the average player is paid above the salary of the average school teacher in the home city, a fan gets punched in the face. So if the average player salary is a million bucks above the average teacher salary then a million local fans get punched in the face.

I agree OP! Different sport but, that's what made the Vikings so great in the 60's and 70's under Bud Grant. All players had to do a minimum of 200 hours of community service. Everyone knew the players by sight and they were without a doubt the local team.

:D

that reminds me of the Green Bay Packers. ...while they certainly aren't local by any means (lol...Green Bay. ...nvm. :sneaky:), the town has legit pride for that team by virtue of the fact that every citizen owns the team. It's a cool model.
