I have a laptop, it is a compaq and has a ML-32 turion proc with a gig of memory and an AMD RS482 chipset.

I've had it for a couple years and haven't re-installed the OS, which I think may be the problem but it may be hardware.

The OS is XP home and the processor stepping isn't working. It used to step from 800 MHZ to 1800 MHZ. But lately it will only run at 1500 MHZ. x8 at 200, used to run at x9 at 200.

Is this a problem with the OS installation or a hardware problem with the laptop.

If I run an intensive process like a virus scan or something it will get to about 90C and turn itself off.

The problem is it doesn't run at full speed anymore the fastest it will run is 1500.

Is it a hardware issue or a problem with the OS.

I've been planning to install Unbuntu or some Linux distro but haven't got to it.

I'm not retarded but am confused by this any insight would be nice.

The laptop mobile cpus usually have an unlocked multiplier, and the speed varies. The lower speed gives you longer battery life and reduces heat. You don't want your laptop overheating.

90C wtf
your fan must be broke or something caught in it or filled with lint.
Letting it hit 90C could be enough to screw up the hardware of the processor.
Otherwise I would have said software.
