MKV's with AAC 5.1 to AC3 5.1

Does anyone know of an easy way to convert some of my older encoded media which I used AAC. Well my Denon 1912 doesn't play back AAC 5.1 It kicks into Dolby Pro Logic.

What is the easiest way to convert my media to something my receiver will support? Is AC3 my best option?

Currently the media is MKV or .mp4 since I originally used handbreak.

Easiest way that I know off the top of my head is to pull the audio file out of the container, re-encode it, and put it back in the container. I don't think Handbrake would let you simply ignore the video and only re-encode the audio.

I figured that was the only way to do it. I would hate to have to do it to all of my videos :\

If you are limited to SPDIF, the easiest thing to do is get an audio device that supports Dolby Digital Live or DTS Connect.

If you're using HDMI then just go with 5.1 pcm.

How many videos are you talking about? Shouldn't take more than about 10 minutes for a full length movie.

Then where is the problem

Your 5.1 AAC track should be decoded by software and sent through HDMI as 5.1 uncompressed pcm. No need to re-encode anything, you'd only lose quality.

So it doesn't matter if my receiver supports AAC or not? So now I need to figure out why my Apple TV isn't outputting PCM to my receiver?

PCM will work but your receiver just won't show DD or DTS on its display. SQ should be exactly the same.

Shouldn't he be seeing "MULTI CH" on the receiver if it is processing 5.1 PCM? I think he's getting the ProLogic because it's a stereo signal.

I assume this is on the AppleTV 2 using XBMC? Did you set your sound settings correctly?

I get the same result using Plex client and the native aTV software. I have yet to try XBMC. I'll try that tonigh.

What should I be using to play these files? Vlc does send PCM out via hdmi

The apple tv has been replaced by a Mac mini.

VLC is probably your best bet. Not sure what other options exist for Mac.
