I really hope this type of car (2/4 door hatch) becomes more popular again in the general public's eye as it is extremely functional for such a small form factor/good gas mileage). The more popular it is, the more options I'll have the next time I look into buying a car. The Golf is very high on my list for the next car purchase (which I keep putting off).

I don't know about that. A Malibu gives a lot more space with it's rear fold down than a GTI, and gets better gas mileage.

There is one crossroads though. Either you get better gas mileage than the GTI (22/33) and lose a little off the line (0-60/9.5) or you get a little worse in gas mileage (17/26) and beat the GTI by a little in speed (6.7).

Just seems like more car for the money, more space, better electronics (USB/Onstar/Bluetooth/XM, Bluetooth and XM cost an arm and a leg comparatively from VW), plus a more reliable car than a GTI going by VW's low reliability reports.

To top it all off, it is cheaper by a little on MSRP, and you can get a GM a lot farther below MSRP than you can a VW in my personal experience (I get the friends and family discount, they always have sales going as well, especially right now).

I don't know, I like VW's but they've never been the "smart buy" when it comes to bang for the buck.

That is exactly why my comment is that I hope the "type of car" gets popular again so that VW is not the only car in the market available.

Perhaps when the "R" AWD model comes out, I might take a look.

This is "Edition 30" in EUR, the version that should have come out instead of the R32. My R32 needs a stablemate.

The R20 looks very interesting and I'd love to own one...but would probably stretch my budget farther than I'd be willing to pay for a Golf.

my brother just picked up a white one this past week. Traded his 2000 993 for it.

It's not a Porsche, but will have a more economical cost of ownership. Fit and finish is surprisingly upscale and the interior is extremely quiet.
