As a tax payer, I'm not too happy about this... who signs the dotted line to authorize this kind of stuff? Sure, 1.4 mil is chump change to the city, but we're already wallowing in tons of debt.

What do you expect the city to do? They can't prevent a private event from happening at a private venue, so there option is to provide police services for the event or allow it to be sheer chaos likely causing even more damages and costs.

That's why the mayor asked MJ fans to kick in money to help cover those costs.

LA county loves to suck at the teets of tax revenue generated by the music and movie industry.

Jackson's estate will generate hundreds of millions in taxable revenue from record-breaking sales of his albums this year.

That's why LA county won't complain about hosting MJ's memorial.

This is a city which depends on the media and entertainment industries. And now it complains when one of its biggest celebrities has a public funeral at a private venue???

And to further expand, how much business did the funeral bring into the city.... hotels, dining, cabs, rental cars, hookers, etc. for fans and media.

I am reminded of the "Gates" art display in Central Park NYC. People complained that it was costing millions of dollars to install and maintain. But it was estimated to bring in additional tourist money far exceeding its cost.

No one should care about the debt south of the border. It's just less welfare given to illegals.

The way I look at it, even if a private promoter choose the venue, the city still had the right to deny the promoter a permit, and could have said no, take the memorial event elsewhere. Or set some precondition regarding who pays for the required police security.

However the damn fools who run the city did none of these things, provided the costly police security, and only now are they looking to stick someone else for the bill. Which should not happen, IMHO, because if they don't pay up front, you can't bill them later.

With idiots running the city, no wonder the city is broke.

can you imagine the uproar that would ensue if the city denied the permit request? they probably would be accused of being racist or something...even if you bring the 'who's gonna for this?' point, it won't matter to these people...

I don't think AEG needs a permit to hold an event at Staples (Unless they apply for a permit for every Laker and Clipper game?) Everything was inside, not outside. It's just that everyone thought 1 million people would show up to be outside and wait around.

There's also a bit of an uproar on the 50k cost for lunches for all of the police - from a vendor in Wrightwood 80 miles away. It just seems to be one big clusterf.

Exactly. Not to mention the money they made from all the people that came to the events.
